ATI Radeon drivers install, but fail to initialize

Thanks torrentg,

I am at work right now so I will have to wait till later on to work on the Windows 7 computer at home. I will try a few things and get back to this thread.

I did email Gigabyte tech support for updated drivers so only time will tell.

thanks again,

Rick

Okay,

In my haste I missed teh part where torrentg says to use the straight up, latest and greatest Catalyst driver for this inf fix.

I goofed around last night to no avail with the drivers from Gigabyte and the ATI Hotfix.

My suspicion is that there is something up with the Vista x64 AGP Hotfix and Gigabyte driver that is a no go in Windows 7. My BSOD mentions atikmdag.sys it is possible this is tweaked in the Hotfix and Gigabyte drivers in such a way as to not work in Win 7.

I will try again this evening...and then if I have no success I will begin pleading for help.

It's all in the details I suppose. I will keep you posted.

Rick

I wonder if this is why the Vista x64 dirvers for AGP don't work in Win 7...since ATI is not offically supporting AGP maybe Win 7 x 64 does not see the Hotfix drivers as "signed"?

Works differently with yours because mobility.

Right click adapter in device manager, properties, details tab, change dropdown to hardware ids. Copy and paste all you see there, to a post here.

Mercy! Uncle! etc.

Well I give. I have exhausted my limited experience. I will start a new thread replete with minidumps and Hardware Id's tonight if performing an upgrade from a new install of Vista X64 does not work.

Hopefully it works though.

Sevjr, please see this resource. It will help you install the latest driver ATI offers for desktop models.

Good luck RR. On the plus side, with a great member's help here, I've started reading minidumps much better than I was able to...so...

I hope you won't need much help further and things go well. :D

Download the Catalyst driver from game.amd.com

Run it and let it extract. Open the CL_83742.inf and add this line where all the similar ones are.

"ATI Radeon HD 4650 AGP" = ati2mtag_R7X, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9495

Hit ctrl+s to save, or file | save.

After doing that, right click your card in device manager, choose update driver software. Browse. Let me pick. Have disk. Browse. Go to the above folder and choose the CL_83742.inf.

If it complains the driver is not signed, let it install anyway. Reboot and then choose an Aero theme by rt clicking desktop, choose personalize.

Run setup.exe in C:\ATI\Support\9-10_vista32_win7_32_dd_ccc_wdm_enu\Driver
if you want CCC too.

I tried that but it says 'windows has determined that the driver software is already up to date', it doesn't even try to install the modded .inf file. I know it's still out of date so I have no idea why it's not even trying to install the drivers that are blatantly more recent.

Going by this thread and since you tried the driver straight from the cd, it is pointless to try to get this to work with the modded .inf:

http://www.sevenforums.com/graphic-...p-ati-hd4650-hasnt-worked-since-saturday.html

Is does seem to install but after reboot I get BSOD, I think it has to do with the order of the HD series lines and the commas. I've noticed there are several 'HD 4600 Series' (That's what it was called in XP) lines and the spech marks after Series go one space further out each line, e.g.

"ATI Radeon HD 4600 Series" = ati2mtag_R7X, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9490
"ATI Radeon HD 4600 Series " = ati2mtag_R7X, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9495
"ATI Radeon HD 4600 Series " = ati2mtag_R7X, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9498

I will try it this way and let everyone know. If not, going PC World tomorrow to pick up a more recent pc with the latest stuff, this computer is 5 years old, maybe asking for Windows 7 to work with a 2009 graphics card was the final straw for my mobo, lol.

hi torrentg, I'm having a problem that _might_ be related to this.. I'm not sure..

I have an ATI 4800, and an NVDA 5300. Only one will work at a time (monitors detected by windows), depending on the slot on the motherboard it's connected to. I think windows is using a Standard VGA Graphics Adapter for the NVDA, but I'm not worrying about that right now... I'm trying to just get all my monitors working first. in Device manager the ATI card's adapter is installed.. and I also tried to install from amd's website.. but after restarting it errors and I presume it's not working..

64-bit. any ideas?

Yeah. They may not be able to to work together on the same machine. The again, they might.

Try installing latest drivers applicable to each card using device manager method. Visit game.amd.com and Nvidia.com

Click on card, update driver software, browse, let me pick, have disk, browse. Now find the install .inf after you extract the driver packages from the .exe by running.

You could visit bios and check on the first video adapter device, or what is labeled default video or default display. You can alter this setting if installing drivers are still giving problems. Play around and see what you can come up with.
