Check your multimedia settings in advanced Power Options.
Let it sleep if when sharing media, if it isn't now.

I set the auto sleep time to 1 minute when I'm troubleshooting these issues - i don't want to wait 15 or more minutes ...

Close all programs such as Chrome, and everything - see if that helps to get auto sleep.
Maybe Chrome is playing media ?

Change plugged in to allow sleep - at least for now.

What if I am watching a movie, would it sleep after the specified time?

I would close all apps to test it and see.
You'll have to test what is does when watching a movie, and when the movie ends ...
Let's just see if we can get auto sleep working, and then fine tune it to your preferences...

It goes to sleep after 30 mins with no app running.

That's good news, now you know auto sleep can work.
Now you can set it back to Prevent idling to sleep when sharing media.
Then run your app (running a movie) and see if it stays awake till the movie ends, and then sleeps.

Some programs prevent idling to sleep no matter what the power plan (system) settings...
If a program like that is running, it will not auto sleep, even if no media is playing.

I can't speak for Chrome, I don't use it.
I know Arcsoft TME (HD PVR) does that.

Your original default setting for battery allowed idling to sleep.
If you think your battery life is long enough to prevent idling to sleep and not have issues, try it.
You have to test your laptop for something like this...

Now you just need to test what programs you run and see how each affects auto sleep.
I'd start with Chrome based on what you said...assuming you play media in Chrome.

No, Chrome is a browser.
I saw it in your energy report ...
VLC is a media player, definitely test how that program affects auto sleep.

The lap wouldn't go to sleep with prevent idling , on battery it does........any recommendations?

The laptop goes to sleep even with apps running, but only when prevent idling is changed to Allow computer to sleep with Plugged in?

I don't know why battery vs. plugged in would make a difference.
I don't have a laptop, but it could be something to prevent battery draining...
You could look in the VLC settings and see if you can find something that might control how it handles sleep.
