VLC has nothing to do from my experience, even on battery when a movie was running it didn't allow the laptop to sleep.
Like posted earlier it sleeps on battery, but when plugged in screen turns dim and black after the set time but doesn't go to sleep.
Yes if the settings are changed for plugged in, to allow sleep from prevent idling the laptop goes to sleep.
It goes to sleep on both modes even if any app like G Chrome, Skype etc are running.
