Hi there, I'm new to these forums but it seems to be the place to get some useful answers to Windows 7 problems. And I have a pretty big one at the moment!

I have experienced the Blue Screen crash on loading up my computer in the last couple of days - it is an intermittent problem too so I've been able to restart ok a few times but then other times not. It first happened 2 days ago when I was actually flying on Microsoft FSX and the computer just shut down (maybe overheated??) and came back up with a BSOD. Since then I have totally removed FSX (it was causing all sorts of issues suddenly) but the Blue Screen has been returning forcing me to restart my computer. Just so you also know on restart when it tries to run CHKDSK it fails - I didn't catch the error message but it certainly didn't work.

Blue screen error message below:

Problem signature:

I've seen a couple of posts on this forum with a similar line of messages but whilst I'm ok with computers, I've found some of the solutions well beyond my capabilities to understand! I'd therefore really appreciate someone giving me any assistance they can and if possible putting things in laymans terms! My computer specs should be on my profile but if not they are:

Dell XPS 435T with Intel Core i7 920 @2.67Ghz
12GB RAM
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
ATI Radeon 5800 Series (driver updated yesterday)
1TB Seagate Hard Disk

Any help much appreciated! Many thanks in advance

James

PS Just read the instructions for posting on BSOD (sorry I'm a newbie) and I've attached the requested files/reports now too. Also, bit more system info:

  • Windows 7 - now my Program Files says x86 but I thought mine was a 64bit system (it says it is when I find out what version I'm using)...maybe you can tell me more
  • It's the original version that was pre-installed on the system OEM
  • System is about 1 year old
  • OS never reinstalled

Hi James,
One dump have 0x116 bugcheck (VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE).
So I would recommend you to reinstalling your VGA card driver. When reinstall, it's better to remove the current driver with driversweeper then download and install fresh copy your ATI Radeon 5800 driver.

There are numerous reports of hardware solutions to VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE. The most common are:
- Poor Cooling
- Problems with the power supply

- Overclocking Issues

- Bad System memory or incorrect memory timings

- Defective PC Components

Another dump indicates hardware_disk failure, maybe its the reason why CHKDSK was failed.
So you must perform hardrive diagnostic --> Sea tools
Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp.

The last dump point to 0x6B (PROCESS1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED) with your system uptime just 8 seconds before the crash.
It maybe related to your Hardrive failure or corrupted OS (windows), so try System File checker:
Right click Command Prompt -> Run as admin -> sfc /scannow

These drivers need to be updated:

Wish, thank you for coming back so quickly. I'm not too sure if I've done things correctly.

Firstly I have run SEA Tools and my Drive has passed all the tests.

Secondly I have run system file checker and it says "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log". I have the CBS Log file but can't open it - should I post it on here? What is it? Do you know what this means?

I'm just going to uninstall my driver as instructed. Should I just reinstall the driver or whole Catalyst Package from ATI's site?

Will also update the other files you mentioned but if you could give me your quick thoughts on the above before I fiddle with the Drivers etc that would be great.

Many thanks again!

I have updated the ATI Driver now. Just for your information in reboot it went to do a CHKDSK again and it said it could not direct access the volume due to issues with some recently installed software...

Not sure if this gives you any more to go on.

About the SFC found corruption files but unable to fix it, I think there is no other way to fix the corrupted files unless perform repair install or clean install.

Thanks Wish, I was coming to the same (frustrating) conclusion myself. I really hope I can perform a repair rather than clean install. Just backing up files just in case. Do you therefore now think it's more likely to be a software (Windows) problem rather than a hardware one?

Wish, thank you for your help today. I've just come out of a long and arduous reinstall process and I'm just running some utilities to clean and make sure my system is all ok. Things seem to be working again though and CHKDSK ran with no problems earlier too. I'll let you know how I'm getting on but it looks like things may be ok now...we shall see!

Further problems today...seems to be iTunes related...

Hi again,

I've had a nightmare today with the computer. Everything was working fine again yesterday after my repair install of Windows 7. I had everything cleaned, checked, defragged etc and it seemed that all was well again. The only fault I have been having was a USB Not Recognised Driver error but I disabled the problem port as nothing was plugged into it. I have also updated most of my drivers today and all looked fine.

However, I then went to reinstall iTunes - I first removed every instance of iTunes (as advised before repairing Windows) using Revo Uninstaller Pro. Once everything was up and running again I then installed iTunes again. It installed ok then I went to open it and nothing happened. It appeared in my Task Manager Processes list but just didn't open the program. I then decided to try to restart the computer to see if that fixed things...and I got a new BSOD:

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
Stop: 1*0000000000000050 (0*FFFFF88000800048, 0*0000000000000001, 0*FFFFF800KCF0600, 0*0000000000000000)

I tried to restart (both with repair and in safe mode but it kept going back to the BSOD). Eventually it created another BSOD:
MEMORY_MANAGER - I didn't get a chance to note down the fault numbers here.

EVENTUALLY it let me back into Safe Mode and then following that normal Windows again although the Event Viewer is littered with errors including Cryptographic ones and NTFS corrupt file errors.

I've attached my dump files and reports as before - I guess I really need some help now guys (or Wish) if you're still there.

Is it iTunes? Does it look like a hardware issue (i.e. something I can go get checked over the weekend by an IT guy) or does it look software related (i.e. can I just do a full clean install of Windows to fix the problem)?

Bit concerned as I couldn't access anything for a while today and reluctant to turn off the machine in case I can't start it again! Any advice, as always is appreciated!

Many thanks - please also advise if I should make a new post on this?

James

Reattached dump file

Wish

I ran the dump file software again so assumed it just overwrote everything. I've deleted the original file and I've run it again and attached the latest one here.

FYI I also ran SEA Tool and all was ok on the tests. I ran SFC and the same message as before was there i.e. corrupt files (which would mirror with the errors I was getting earlier). Have removed iTunes and it's been ok for the past hour or so but I've really not done anything for fear of it not working! Think I'll be leaving it on tonight so i can fix things tomorrow..

Have made a copy of all my installed programs and backed up all my documents so if worst comes to worst I'll do a clean W7 install. Want to check it isn't hardware first though ideally before I do that.

Let me know your thoughts on the dump file attached.

Thanks

James

Hmm, there is still no dump files, you can check it in (C:\Windows\Minidump).
Maybe your cleaning software delete that files, so you must stop to use any cleaning software unless necessary.

Then sfc indicates corrupted files like before, I think there is two possibilities:

You have installer software that is corrupted/virus infected/incompatible. So when installing that software it'll damage your windows. It is better to perform full scan all your hardisk with good Antivirus (updated). If it impossible to perform the scan from your Computer due instability then you may do it on other PC.
http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

The other cause is hardware failure = most likely your Hardisk always lost data and make windows corruption.
So you must perform hardisk diagnostics --> Sea tools --> choose Long Drive Selt Test

And if you get another BSOD, it'll generated dump files and you may run the jcgriff2.exe again to collect new data.

Attached JCGriff again but cannot find the dump file

Hi Wish, I've had another BSOD but it doesn't seem to be generating any dump files that I can see - no cleaning software running. I've attached the JCGriff I've just run but not sure if it has much info for you.

As an update, I've run a full scan with MSE for viruses - it quarantined one but it was classed as low urgency and would cause no problems. I'm currently running a Long DST with Seagate - nothing to report here yet but will post again once completed - it's not called Long for nothing!

I also spoke to Dell customer services (doh, didn't realise I was still under warranty). They performed a boot diagnostic at start up on the hardware (not memory) which ran through cleanly. Their conclusion was that it must therefore be a software problem so he instructed me to F8 on reboot and choose Repair Windows...did this and got BSOD again with PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA Stop: 0*00000050.

This confused them and they basically said they'll send a technician out next week as it could be a hardware issue? i.e. they don't have a clue what's happening either. I've figured out I can access W7 on start up by cancelling any CHKDSK procedures - it seems to start ok. However, if I let them run then I get a BSOD or it restarts and crashes...

I'm not sure what to do - a technician will come round in the week so perhaps I should wait until then. Or should I do a clean install of W7 and see if it fixes things? If it's a hardware issue then this may be pointless although if they replace the Hard disk they'll need a clean install anyway! Any advice for me?

Like I say - couldn't find the minidump where you mentioned but ran the JCGriff again anyway. All other tests seem to be coming up ok. Leads me to think it's a faulty hard disk with intermittent problems...

Thoughts?

Ok that's good you don't have virus issues so we can move to next steps tough I still curious about your Long Drive test result.

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA Stop: 0x50 usual cause by driver or RAM.
Since there is no dump files, I couldn't analyze all drivers that load in your Memory.
So I'll suggest you to test your RAM with memtest for at least 7 passes (better overnight)
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.html

Then make sure your system is configured to be able to generate minidump files.
= Start -> search -> sysdm.cpl -> advance -> starup and recovery

Long DST Test Pass!

Hi Wish

The Seagate Long DST test has just finished and my computer passed!

I've also changed the settings to generate the dumps as you've outlined - next BSOD should produce some information for us!

I will now set up the RAM memory test and leave it on for the next 12-16 hours or so - suppose we're eliminating things slowly. Not sure now - maybe some driver problems? Software more likely now? Still confusing!

Will post results of the mem test once done.

Thanks again

James

RAM Test Complete

Hi Wish

I have left the computer to run 10 passes on the memory test and there were no errors. The Long DST with Seagate also passed as I mentioned yesterday.

Shall I force a BSOD to generate a dump file for you to look at? I am able to access W7 currently by simply cancelling the attempts on start up of CHKDSK to run. If I let CHKDSK run then it causes the BSOD.

I guess then you may be able to look at any driver conflicts? I think it's looking likely that a formatting of my HDD and reinstall of Windows 7 may be the way to go later. Again your comments would be appreciated on this. I want to ensure I have the latest drivers and no conflicts so any guidance on good software I can use to achieve this would be appreciated.

Incidentally I do still trace back the latest round of BSOD to reinstalling iTunes - this seemed to cause all manner of problems and I wonder if there are some drivers associated with this which could be causing the latest issues?

Look forward to hearing from you.

Many thanks

James

Hi Wish

Thank you for the instructions.

Just ran driver verifier and it didn't cause a crash. I rebooted and still got the CHKDSK attempt to check Recovery and my C: Drive which I just cancelled - Windows then opened.

Any ideas now? Can we safely eliminate it being a hard disk and RAM problem? If so it would lead towards a faulty driver or Windows software problem?

I can try and create a BSOD so you can see the dump if that would help?

Let me know your thoughts.

James

A new BSOD and system seems slow suddenly...

Hi Wish,

Just did a restart to see what was happening. As it was shutting down it just went to a new BSOD:

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Stop: 0*0000000A (0*0000000000000000,0*0000000000000002,0*0000000000000000,0*FFFFF8000329D2B3)

Any idea what this is? It said it was creating a dump file so I left it to do that and I've tried to run JCGriff again but it seems to be stuck Copying Mini Kernel Memory Dump Files and has been for the last 5 minutes or so... System seems to be running a lot slower now for some reason too...bit worried as it almost seems like the whole thing is corrupted and ready to crash. Would really appreciate any guidance to see whether we can get this resolved once and for all. I'll do a clean install if necessary.

Thanks Wish,

James
