browsing control panel....and it crashed.

In my background , i'm running firefox and MSN. I just installed AVG as well.

Ive read a few posts in here about strange behavior in 7 with AVG.
Try uninstall it (turning it off does not unload the drivers from the kernel).

The old man is retiring for the night.

If test fails, do these two next, maybe at the same time

ncpa.cpl
nvcpl.cpl

eventually, we will do all.

sfc /scannow might be easier

It is also possible that we are chasing the wrong thing. Could be video driver.

move physx.cpl out and place on desktop.

Test
Hmm , i move the physx.cpl out from the menu to desktop.
The physx.cpl still in the menu ?
Did i missed out something?

Check for physx.mui as well. move if exist. I can hang a few more minutes

DUI70.dll is apparently the Windows Direct UI Engine, so I'd say try updating your video drivers, disabling aero, and running sfc /scannow (you need to run this in an administrator console)

Sorry bro , i was caught up with work lately.
The problem still exist despite that move.

@ chev65 : i'm already using the latest driver from nvidia site. I ran the sfc /scannow , it exit itself upon verifying the files(no other prompts). What does it mean?

Thanks.

Similar problems (DUI70.dll crashes) were related to corrupt CPL (and MUI apparently) files. Remove one at a time and test. Or remove all and test.

A similar problem has been reported and fixed with an odd combo of actions.

Disconnect from internet.
Uninstall anti-virus
Test.

Also, I have, on more than one occassion, removed a driver, swept the driver, re-installed the driver, to fix a problem.

You could uninstall your video driver, use DriverSweeper and re-install.

hmm out of curiosity , i re-installed the windows7 again.
this time i did not install any software or drivers first , just plain windows7 only.

i navigate the control panel for the past 15-20mins and even longer. it did not crash.

The softwares/drivers i did not install are : Soundcard driver , Nvidia driver , AVG and MSN.

Should i install the nvidia driver from the windows update ? Or from nvidia site? IIRC , the version from windows update site is one version older. Whatever it is , either versions that i'm going to install , i fear the controlpanel may crash again. Sigh.

If you do not use any "special" features of the nVidia card, Windows driver is fine. On my ATI card, I use an overscan setting that is not available with the Windows driver.

Soundcard drivers are famous for causing these types of problems. Just install one driver at a time and test in control panel so you can figure out which one is causing the problems.

I have too this problem. The control panel crash was causing igfxcpl.cpl. So i move it from System32 folder and now is control panel fully working without crashing. I think that Intel Video Driver is old and doesn't support Win 7.

Try both of them.

I don't know exactly which one solved my Windows 7 Control Panel navigation problem, but now my Control Panel works perfectly without crashing...

Is there a hotfix page for Windows 7 on Microsoft's site for us mere technet/msdn users yet? Or are those "in the wild" patch files?

Where did you get those hotfixes? I looked for them on Microsoft's Knowledge Base but can't find them.
