Solved Cannot connect to the net

Have just done up one of my older machines (Compaq SR1915AN) and given it to a friend. Now she has bought on of those wireless broadband devices and I cannot get it to connect except for my cable connection.
I was thinking that this computer had a wireless capability built in but it hasn't and a Google has thrown up a USB device or a Pci card adaptor.

Now my query is which one do I get as the HP site is not terribly informative, and I really am at a loss as to which to get ? maybe both and hope?

Hi ICit2lol,

Where is your friend trying to connect to? Is it her own router? Is it a secured network? What is the O/S of her computer?
Did the driver correctly installed? You may check the Device Manager for any symbols ? X or !

If everything looks good in Device Manager, she may try changing the network security (WEP, WPA, WPA2). Although WEP is not too secured, you may have her give it a try to connect to a WEP security up to WPA2.

If she is still have trouble connecting, please have her give you an ipconfig /all output on a .txt file. Also, have her give you a screen capture of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector Tool and upload both of them on your next post.

I"d go with a USB one. They are easier to install than a pci one because you just plug them in.

I'm using a D-link DWA-140 wireless N USB adaptor and it works really well for me.

John, I just had a thought, does she have the subscription up to date and paid for? It's monthly I'd assume, like a cell phone.

Sorry for late reply - power outage for a few hours.

Now the device she had I can only liken to a cell phone that picks up the signal from the provider (our national one) and then transmits it to the computer.

Now I am now pretty sure that the machine doesn't have a wireless capability so it has no way of receiving the signal. So have got a D-Link DWA-125 locally as they didn't have any adaptor cards for putting on the mobo. I was just wondering which would be the best type to use.

It has Windows 7 Home premium on a new hard drive I put in and I set the whole thing up using my own modem.
Now I don't know what she has done in the meantime as Telstra (the carrier) have been less than helpful and they have given her instructions to "set up" the wireless device and it goes straight to "Connected" but I am assuming that they have also told her how to set the machine up and now it is not even connecting via my modem - well I can get Google up with no fancy colours but it will not do a search - I was going to look for drivers for any wireless connections.
There is nothing in device manager except in Network adapters - Nvidia nforce 10/100/1000 Mbs Ethernet (driver is current) and under Modems there is PCI Soft Data Fax modem with Smart CP. - no yellow? in either.
She is not very computer literate and may have carried out the carriers instructions which have resulted in the pickle it is now in.

I am going to try the dongle out and see what happens.

I agree with the USB Wi-Fi adapter, this is a lot less hassle to install as long as she doesn't have too many USB devices plugged in the computer that might create conflicts. Personally I never had any major issues installing the USB wireless adapter. If you encounter issues installing, I'd suggest to download the latest driver from the manufacturer's site.

That dongle, does it connect directly to the computer via USB?

Yes mate it connects via a USB and the "modem" is sitting right next to the dongle (on an extension lead) on top of the computer.

I loaded the software as per the instructions with it and took out the Ethernet cable but it will not connect. Have tried it three times now using the WPS set up wizard as the other option of manual set up I don't understand.

Perhaps the "modem" and receiver dongle are just not compatible? and just maybe it would be better for her to get a straight [plug in dongle and avoid using the "modem" type?

Sorry 2xg must have cross the posts - I cannot get the ipconfig to come at all - if you mean type in ipconfig it comes with an open box that disappear shwen I click on it.

Should I ping the ip in command prompt?

Ah again messages crossing 2xg I just ran a Google on how to do the ipconfig took a pic of it - means very little to me but I might just try that suggestion on my spare laptop.

Thanks for your effort. The WLAN is showing a 'Media Disconnected' and the LAN setting looks good.

If you have a spare laptop or desktop, can you plug in the USB wireless adapter and see if you're able to install it fine and connect?

Edit: Can I verify something? Is the Telstra Modem your device or your friend's? Is it a Gateway with Wi-Fi capable? Other wireless devices in your network able to connect to it?

Edit 2: I've found this manual for you on how to setup Telstra. According from this pdf manual provided by Bigbond, as Telstra is unable to provide router support, but the configuration should be similar. Please give it a try, it might help.

Are we talking about the first ipconfig or the second one? Posting from two different machines tends to confuse things. Looks like the second one has the DWA-125.

You should unplug the Ethernet cable from that machine before trying to connect wirelessly as Windows 7 has a hard time connecting though both connections at the same time and tends to choose the wired connection when available.

The manual that 2XG posted should help with the wireless set up.

Yep the second larger readout I couldn't find a way of removing the original pic.

Now the Ethernet cable is removed but the dongle I have since found out I had been putting in the wrong security code what I thought was a small o was in fact a 0 (zero) - not a very clear thing to read as the digits are small and the letters Caps.:sarc:

Now the icon at bottom right of the screen is telling me the wireless device is connected and I can download Windows updates but it will not do a Google search.

The provider has asked me to try this device in another laptop which I will later - have got to dash to work right now if it works on my laptop then I have to go back to the machine and sort it out.

As previously suggested in Post# 12, yes definitely consider to install the USB DLink adapter to another computer. We'll find out if it's faulty or there's some configuration missing on the router. Also, try another laptop or Smart phone to connect to your Telstar Modem.

ICit2lol - If we are confusing you please don't hesitate to ask and raise your hand.
Networking can be a little complicated. I would also suggest for you to re-read our previous suggestions just to make sure that you're not overlooking our Posts/Suggestions. We would like to help you resolved your issue.

Hey so sorry for extremely late reply but back to work and trying to catch up.

Have got the adaptor working and the wireless device is showing it is connected as does the network in control panel but no connection and will not even connect with my ADSL cable either now.

Microsoft are also telling me this is not a genuine version to add to the woes. It is a genuine version as I put in a new HDD new RAM and changed the processor and did a general clean up and installed the OEM 7 and all was well until the new owner tried to get onto the net with th wireless thing.

Well now M$ have chipped in I really am up the creek without you know what. I might have to start from scratch by wiping the drive reseating the RAM and CPU and doing a reinstall all over again.

The machine was originally an old XP install that I was using before renewing all that stuff and installing 7 and had no problems.

I just hope I don't have to bin this machine on account of some technicality with M$

Quite frankly it is getting very depressing.

Quite frankly it is getting very depressing.

It sounds like that machine has problems other than just networking. Often times performing a clean install is the best and fastest way to fix these sorts of problems.

The reason it's showing up as not genuine is probably because of the hardware changes you made to the system. You can usually straighten out those types of problems by calling Microsoft.

If the problem is with the network stack or DNS the file below can fix that although it sounds like there are more problems involved here. Save the file, unzip and let it run until your machine reboots itself.

Yeah I think you are right chev I am not sure what has happened to it since I gave it to the friend as the wallpaper had been changed to some lowry psychedelic patterns and therein has some other settings been interfered with probably not intentionally but none the less has spun the thing round.

It is really concerning that my own ADSL will not even hook up as I could have sorted drivers or suchlike if I could get onto the net.

So am going to do a restore to an earlier point as I have spoken to her and she said a friend who knew about computers had tried to set the network up??

Then if that doesn't work a fresh install and all those updates and apps I think and see what it brings if it persists then maybe the mobo has eaten the biscuit!

Well have got it going via a system restore and reinstall the pick up dongle software.

Have spoken to the friend as to what was done in the network settings - she didn't know but whatever that friend of hers did really threw a spanner into the cogs.

Anyway ahhve now rebooted a few times and it auto connects so iI have told the friend that this friend of hers is NOT to touch the settings and preferably the machine full stop.
