Hum just writing to say thanks for the help too. To be honest I didn't twig it until I eventually rang that girl to ask if she had done anything to the machine and then it dawned on me that that other friend has obviously changed something significantly as the cable would not hook up - and well the rest you know.

I would love to find out just what she did do even for future reference if not to hang her on the fence to dry for a while LOL!! Certainly I should have contacted her before now I suppose but good experience all the same as I said for future reference.

Good news! Sometimes you need to flush the DNS cache and make sure you have restored MS's Hosts file.

You can easily do this by running this "batch file" as Administrator:

Copy and paste these lines in Note pad.

@Echo on
pushd\windows\system32\drivers\etc
attrib -h -s -r hosts
echo 127.0.0.1 localhost>HOSTS
attrib +r +h +s hosts
popd
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
netsh winsock reset all
netsh int ip reset all
shutdown -r -t 1
del %0

Save as flush.bat to your desktop.
Vista and Windows 7... right click the .bat file and choose to run as Administrator. Your computer will reboot itself.

Thanks Jaycee I take all comments like this from you all as compliments as I really am not that clever and I'll keep that as a word doc as well

In hindsight this has been a really good learner for me as I don't understand a lot of the tech jargon until something like this happens and then can apply it to what I have witnessed / had happen.
