Can't connect to Homegroup - different types of network

I have two computers, HP notebook and DEsktop. I can't join the Desktop to the Homegroup. HP notebook is connected with a wireless router and Desktop is connected with an ethernet cable.

Is it correct that the above is not permitted for computers in a Homegroup?

1. IPv6 is enabled.

2, I've gone through the material on the link to no avail. It includes the following:
Connected to Same Network

Though this might sound obvious, you need to make sure the computer is connected to the same network the HomeGroup is on. Only computers on the same subnet will be able to connect to the HomeGroup, so if you have a wireless router, it would only be the computers connected to that router.
You can check if your computers are on the same network by going to the command prompt and typing in IPCONFIG. The first 3 parts of the IP Address should be the same, i.e. 192.168.0.x or 10.0.1.x

That's why I thought that possibly I couldn't have one computer connected via a wifi router and the other via an ethernet cable.

You could try the Troubleshooting the HomeGroup and see if it can fix anything.

Also, can you connect the Laptop with an Ethernet cable so the Desktop and Laptop are both connected via cable ?
If you can, try that and see if it makes a difference.

I've run the Troubleshooting Homegroup several times. About connecting the notebook \via an ethernet cable, that's a fine idea. I'll get another cable and try it.

I disconnecteed the wireless connection, then plugged in an ethernet cable to the router (same one the ethernet cable to the Desktop is connected to) and to the Notebook. But that didn't work to connect the Notebook to the internet. Troubleshooting that gave the following message:

"Local Area Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration"

Maxie, I can't run the flash video.
I tried Firefox and IE 11 on Win 8.1, everything is fully updated.
I have add-ons in FF that might cause this, but IE is "clean"...

I followed the video's instructions. for the ethernet connection (Local Area Connection) instead of the wireless connection, and the result was that Windows Network Diagnostics (it ran automatically) said "Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem".

Absolutely. The troubleshooter started automatically after the end of that process.

2) Using a LAN cable (as I suggested ) on the Laptop vs. working WiFi

Can you disconnect the Laptop LAN cable, and reconnect successfully using WiFi ?

I've seen problems with HomeGroup where the "fix" ended up creating a new HomeGroup.
Are you interested in trying that ?

That sounds like your #2 above. The answer is yes, notebook connects to the internet using the wifi, either without the ethernet cable connected.

So, as I understand it,
- You created a HomeGroup on the Laptop
- The Desktop cannot join the HomeGroup
- There are NO other PCs in the current HomeGroup

To delete the current HomeGroup, and create a new HomeGroup
- Leave the HomeGroup on the Laptop
- CREATE a New HomeGroup on the DESKTOP
- See if the Laptop can join the new HomeGroup

Did you try just leaving the HomeGroup with the Laptop and then joining it again?

I got my two computers able to see the hard drives on the other computer and am able to copy files from the remote computer to the local one. Not using Homegroup, just straight networking. Don't ask me now I did it but I did find and "fix' several settings, probably notably sharing settings and having the same username on both computers.
