When I click 'mouse' in control panel, windows thinks for a second, then just nothing happens - the configuration window doesn't appear.
This is annoying in particular because I can't redefine the right side button, which by default opens the magnifier.

Currently I have 3 mice installed:
- Synaptics touchpad
- Microsoft intellipoint
- keyboard trackball mouse

I have an HP Pavilion dv6 3310 laptop (see specs here).
Running Windows 7 x64.

Is there an icon for one or more of the above in the task monitor down by the clock? if yes what happens if you click it?

No icon in the tray that has to do with any of the mice..

I tried to open Microsoft Mouse from start menu (instead of control panel). Same thing. Then I reinstalled the Intellipoint software. Still the same.

This is just a guess, but I would think you have too many pointing devices. It sounds like the intellapoint software can't differentiate between all those devices.

is there another way to change the buttons settings? maybe in registry?
I don't want the magnifier to show up.

I don't know, maybe? Temporarily disable the touch pad, unplug your trackball/keyboard, and try running the Intellapoint software again. If this is only a resent problem you could try system restore.

I also agree you've too many pointing devices.

When I tried to use the touchpad on a Sony Vaio along with a Logitech wireless mouse I had big problems with the cursor making unexpected movements so I disabled the touchpad; problem cured.

I also tried to use an HP wireless keyboard with a Microsoft USB mouse and had problems with both the keyboard and mouse.

With either a Microsoft keyboard and mouse (both wired) or an HP wireless keyboard and wireless mouse the problems were cured.

Awesome!!!! not only did this open the settings window, now it works from control panel too! thanks much :)

Before trying this, I found a registry workaround (explained here):

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\IntelliPoint\ModelSpecific\34\EventMapping\8]
"Keystroke"=dword:000000a7
"Setting"=dword:0000019c
"KeystrokeText"="Forward"
#Mappings:
#Right 2
#Middle 4
#Left side 6
#Right side 8
