I use CCleaner...all of it...start up app disabling, clean up and registry cleaning. At default settings, CCleaner doesn't do anything harmful to the registry, and you can always choose the backup option.
There are people who say there is no need to clean the registry, but I can give several examples of where CCleaner has resolved issues for me BY cleaning the registry. It's a safe program to use, and trusted pretty much everywhere I read.
