I've notice this a few wks ago, I searched for answers but no solution yet?!

When I put a cd or dvd in my LiteOn drive nothing happens? I try to double click on the drive or right click play and I get the following error message...

8-31-20112-23-53PM.jpg

Now from the tree view I can double click on the drive it opens but if I try to right click and select play I on the drive get the error message again? I can play the files fine.

8-31-20112-25-04PM.jpg

I've also tried the Microsoft AutoPlay fix but that crashes?!
This is driving me crazy!!

Any help would greatly be appreciated!!

I have only had that error when I have had UltraISO install or a virtual drive installed as well. Right Click on the CD device and "open with" the appropriate program. And it should associate a program the read those particular files.

"the file type i see is cda. this is not a music track it is a file extension that holds tag information"

That's what your file looks like after a burned Audio CD. If I burned it as an mp3 they would've showed as mp3 files.

I have all my music files associated with WMP.

I also have Power ISO but all drives are disabled & unmounted.

did you read the link i gave you

How to Work With Audio CD .CDA Files

Yes I did..."An audio CD will show .cda files, which are tracks information for the underlying mp3 files. Although the songs will be there internally, yet the files will be shown as cda."

Like I said if I open the CD/DVD I can play the files fine. The problem is double clicking or right click on the drive I get that error message.

I put the same CD in my Laptop, right away I get the AutoPlay window & I can also double click on the drive and WMP plays the cd.

ok . well that rules out the drive and file type . not really sure what could be the problem . will have a bit of a google around for you.
edit ,ok have had a look around and two things to try.
go to device manager , uninstall the cd/dvd drive then reboot. the drivers will re install.
secondly.
try the microsoft fixit tool
http://support.microsoft.com/mats/cd_dvd_drive_problems/en-us

thats about it for me so good luck, hopefully someone else can add to this thread that has experienced it before.

When you say this:
"Now from the tree view I can double click on the drive it opens but if I try to right click and select play I on the drive get the error message again? I can play the files fine."
What do mean by:
"if I try to right click and select play I on the drive get the error message"
and
"I can play the files fine"?

When you right click "Play" is one of the options you get in the context menu.

What happens when you keep <SHIFT> pressed as you put the disk in and wait a while? Error message? Or does it Autoplay?

I believe you have been through most of the setting options in my link below, but just in case there is one which has not been done:
Change which programs Windows uses by default

Also, some more useful Questions and Answers:
AutoPlay: frequently asked questions

Ok check this out, under "Set default Programs" Windows media player is not listed??

Now if I right click on a mp3 and select "open with", WMP is one of my options??

But under default media player it's enabled??

And nothing happens with "Shift".

Did you try this:

Use this option to choose which programs you want Windows to use, by default.
2784ea7e-2f04-466b-85d2-e8fca0bfd29e_48.jpg
You can choose the programs that Windows uses by default

If a program does not show up in the list, you can make the program a default by using Set Associations.

  1. Open Default Programs by clicking the Start button
    4f6cbd09-148c-4dd8-b1f2-48f232a2fd33_818.jpg
, and then clicking Default Programs.
  2. Click Associate a file type or protocol with a program.
  3. Click the file type or protocol that you want the program to act as the default for.
  4. Click Change program.
  5. Click the program that you want to use as the default for the file type you selected, or click the arrow next to Other Programs to show additional programs. (If you don't see Other Programs, or your program is not listed, click Browse to find the program you want to use, and then click Open. If no other programs are installed that are able to open the file type or protocol, your choices will be limited.)
    0d7edf94-e075-40d4-9824-a7173a0e1e49_46.jpg
If you don't see the program you want to use as the default, click the arrow next to Other Programs to see a list of programs available on your computer
  6. Click OK.
