My CD/DVD drives have stopped working. I have tried loads of things like deleting files from the registry from posts received on forums. I cannot get the usb ports to recognise a usb memory stick. The stick is ok as it is ok on several machines and I have tried other sticks but have the same problem. The usb ports work the mouse and keyboard with no problems. Any help much appreciated. I am running XP on a Dell machine (out of warranty).

I have had USB ports go stupid on me. For me, what woke them up was to power down the machine, unplug the power cord, disconnect all USB cables from the machine that go to devices that have their own power, like printers, and then plug the power cord back in and power back up. After it's booted up, I plugged the USB cables back in and the USB ports were working fine. This happened with Vista, Windows 7 and linux - a hardware problem.

Bye.

Maybe check in Control Panel=>Power Plan Settings=>Modify Advanced Parameters, if you have not set the USB Parameters to be disabled on demand.
