Certain Websites not working

Hi,

I've got a problem using IE8 on Windows 7 where it won't let me connect to certain websites. One of these websites is www.utorrent.com.

Normally, I would think that this error is occurring because the website is down, however, when using my laptop (using Vista and IE8), which is connected to the internet via the same router, the website is available.

I have disabled Windows Firewall on the Windows 7 machine, and all anti-virus software, but I still have this issue. Can anyone help me and give me some instructions on what I should do?

Thanks

Two easy things to try, first
You can change browsers FF is a good choice and used by many or

you could type turn off windows in search. Then click on window features and then un check the IE box. This in effect turns off your IE.

Now turn off the computer
Boot up and turn windows back on. Remember until you turn it back on, you have no internet connection, until you restore IE.

Try either one of these, it may or may not work.

You could also try flushing your DNS

To do this open up a command prompt (run cmd.exe) then type in ipconfig /flushdns

If you paste 67.215.233.130 into your browser what results do you get ?

Hi all!

Thank you all very much for your assistance. It is a refreshing change to find people on the internet who are willing to assist others with their queries.

I have figured out what was going on. It appeared that the affected websites were caught in my hosts file and accordingly, were being effectively blocked by my machine.

As they were not in the hosts file of the laptop, the laptop was always able to access them.

Once again, thanks for your assistance.

Id like to learn too. I know what the numbers represent, etc, but how does using the IP address rather than the Domain prove anything more than just using the domain address?

DNS.. Domain Name System

It maps IP addresses to name servers... So using the IP address can prove that the servers are down or its a problem with the DNS etc etc

^^ +1 If the Ip address pings and domain name doesnt, then the issue is with DNS.
