Solved Computer won't boot to Windows 7 pro - have tried everything

Is this a SATA drive or just IDE? If SATA ... do you ever attach external SATA drives?
External USB-drives use another controller as IDE and SATA drives . So I don't understand the controller error on harddisk5 (whatever that may be)

the harddisk5 was a rare error - it only occured like once or twice and it was 7-10 months ago.

it is a SATA drive but i don't think i attach an external SATA drives....only some usb externals. again, most of the harddisk errors were for 1 and the source was "disk"

that is one of the exact errors and yes, they are mostly event ID 55, but there are also some 131's mixed in. also, there is an "application popup: aolload.exe - corrupt file: the file or directory c:\windows\system32\en-us\msdtc.exe.mui is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility."
log name: system
source: application popup
event ID: 26
level: information

this happened just before the group of ntfs errors at 3:19, but it didn't necessarily happen first, as there are also a few NTFS errors that happened before this...although none refer to c:

oh, we do have windows server 2003 on our server...that hosts the "atwin2k" software and we use a client service to run them from each individual computer. also, all the computer stations are mapped to go to that server computer (but the crash was not on the server).
crash was on client so an win7 issue.
NTFS errors refer to what drive ?? I want to know what harddrive5 is!

So eventid 55 is the problem mostly. Can you post some details of eventid 131

Event ID 57, event ID 55, and event ID 50 may be logged when you use Windows Cluster on Windows Server 2003 is not exactly windows 7 but similar. What EVENTID have the errors in eventlog? What is the event source and description? I mean something like this:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: NTFS
Event ID: 55
Description:
The file system structure on disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume "Drive_letter:"
Event ID: 55 normally describes the drive letter. Are you sure it isn't in description?

event id 131 is
"the file system structure on volume C: cannot be corrected.
Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume C:."
log name: system
source: ntfs
event id: 131
level: error
user: system

occurred about 3 minutes before the last system log entry, in the midst of the event id 55 errors.

as for the harddisk5, the only entries i have for that one are back on 11/19/2010 and 12/7/2010....there was a warning (eventid 51) first, then eventid 11 disk error. that's it for that though. could be a usb device like iphone or flash drive.

the ntfs errors just before crash referred to c: - the ones before that (maybe 30-45 minutes) do not refer to a drive letter. there is a path like \something\harddisk2\dr2\

when i checked the system logs, there was a file "atwpkt.sys" that was installed a short time prior to the crash. i think it is related to a company software hosting program "atwin2k" also, there was a "multiprocessor free" update for windows 7 sp1 about 25 minutes before it crashed. system logs also mention the system volume being corrupted about a half dozen times at maybe 5 or 10 minute intervals.

oh, yes, i rebuilt the MBR, but i don't know what "installation" you are referring to in the next sentences.

When you boot into Win7 Repair it attempts to detect an OS to repair which appears in a windows for you to highlight then proceed to Recovery Tools, an offered auto-repair, or to restore from a system image. I am asking if this installation had appeared in that window earlier, or only later. You said that it appeared before Startup Repair worked.

Did Rebuild MBR from PW Disk start Win7 or did you have to also run Startup Repair?

Please post back a screenshot of your maximized Disk Mgmt drive map, using Snipping Tool in Start menu.

I would also run Disk Check on the Win7 partition after posting the screenshot.

the installation never appeared in that window before the last attempt at PW/resize. i apologize if i said that it appeared before that last attempt.

the rebuild did not start win7; i had to run startup repair...although again it did this automatically. on other tries, the o/s never showed up in that window and also, i had to initiate the startup repair manually.

i will get the screen shot once i find where the drive map is. hold on.

You had to do it manually because your machine didn't know what operating systems were installed. the bootmenu on C-drive wasn't accessible. Now it can access bootmenu but couldn't start win7 because bootmenu points to some startsector of your old C-drive. Your win7 disk is not on same startsector because you moved the partition. Because of this it enters recovery environment and performs startup repair.

PW did fix the "corrupt volume issue". But of course the problem can still reoccur. I'm convinced it's a problem only with your harddrive. Reason is nfts ... hmm no driver or realy culprit listed in eventlog.

What is brand and model of laptop?

I don't want to look for the specs, so questoin. What is listed in "device manager" under "IDE/ATA ATAPI-controllers" ? check it's properties, driver, details as well.

  1. Make a manual "restore point" so you can revert back if needed
  2. upgrade the driver in device manger. right click on it, upgrade, search on my computer, select "choose for list", select "standard AHCI 1.0 serial ATA control"
  3. press OK multiple times and reboot
(I'm dutch so maybe wrong translated instructions)

What's the "IDE/ATA ATAPI-controllers" contents in device manager now?

well chkdsk found no problems. one thing that may be of interest is that back in april 2007, when the computer was created, it did find a slew of problems and made corrections. not sure if this matters, since it's so long ago, but i figured i'd mention it. i found it when i did a "find" for "wininit" in the application log.

I think Intel(R) ICH8. But you can see yourself. If the new standard one is in the list then it's fine.
1-delete other 3 drivers in list
2-upgrade ICH8 driver

after upgrading and rebooting the Intel ICH stuff should be gone. Otherwise remove that driver from list.
leave ATA 0 and ATA 1 in the list if they reappear
