Let me guess: you are using AVG 9.0. Right? It has a memory leak in it. If not, some other program has a memory leak. Could you please post a screenshot of your task manager?

Hi reddown and welcome

If your CPUis running at 100% there is something wrong. In 2 different OS'es says its hardware.

Lets first find out what is using the most

Launch task manager by right clicking the task bar.
Click the show all users, then the cpu tab on top so the process that is using the most is on top (see pic)

Use the snipping tool to make a screenshot (type snipping tool in search)
then using the attachment icon (shaped like a paperclip) in the reply form

See pics for all three

I agree. MSE is my AV of choice.

Can anyone compare MSE to Avast yet?

I am really interested in MSE, but after putting Avast on over 100 machines without a single issue or virus, it would have to be a whole lot better.

I guessed MS was going to take the plunge one day, and when they did it would probably eventually wipe out the whole market.

They're the biggest targets, after all.

I will. I have never used Avast before, but I will post back sometime with memory usage, usability, and virus detecting capabilities.
All when I have the time.

Try a repair install to reset things. Run DVD from desktop and choose Upgrade install.

Drivers? You install the right ones? Which ones and for what bits of hardware?

Agreed, the Win7 installer is nearly driver complete yet many transitioning from XP think they need to import drivers like chipset as before. This is unnecessary.

MS funded the WHQL partnership with all manufacturers which developed Win7 drivers, so they have them first. What isn't in the installer will come in quickly from Windows Updates.

Only exotic drivers need to be provided, and I would have my LAN just in case. Otherwise it starts up to the internet and usually has any newer drivers by the time you do Updates. If you keep ethernet plugged during install it will begin updating while installing.

Consider a formatted clean install if you replaced a bunch of the installer's drivers, or sys restore back before then and start over.
