Hello all, I'm new to the forums, I've been having problems lately with my Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 2.53 GHZ OC'ed to 3 GHZ with a cooler master TX3 heatsink. When i'm in game (Bad Company 2) My CPU usage goes to 99% - 100%. Sometimes I get lag, and sometimes I don't. At idle my CPU goes from ~1% - 100%. I checked if I had thermal compound between my CPU and heatsink, it had plenty. Do you think my CPU is shot? I've been thinking on upgrading to a Core 2 Quad 9400 anyways.

Hi SSgTMartin, and welcome to Windows Seven Forums! :D

My advice would be to run Prime95 for a few hours (Google it) and if you get any errors, then your overclock might be bust - try stepping the OC back a notch if this is the case. Hope that helps. :)

I would also recommend getting Process Explorer
and monitor it for a while and see if a process is doing it.

Would also suggest turn off over clocking completely and run at stock speed and see if the issue continues.

There shouldn't be "plenty" of thermal compound - just a very thin layer made from a drop about the size of a grain of rice. Also, if you removed the sink from the CPU, you shouldn't reuse the compound - you should clean it off an apply some new compound (grain of rice spread over CPU).

That's what I meant by plenty. Everytime I take the heatsink off I use isopropyl alcohol to remove the compound. Then I reapply Arctic Silver.

I read somehwere that it can take upto a few months (year maybe) for the full potential of cooling compound to give it's best results. Just a heads up.

I read somehwere that it can take upto a few months (year maybe) for the full potential of cooling compound to give it's best results. Just a heads up.

There is a break in period for all compounds,,, but,.,,
It depends on the compound itself as to how long to settle in.

What compound is being used, and how and what it is being applied to as well.

The only Thermal Compound I recommend is ArcticSilver5.
There might be other that is as good, but I only trust what I know is good.

ArcticSilver5 - During the CPU's initial use, the compound thins out to enhance the filling of the microscopic valleys and ensure the best physical contact between the heatsink and the CPU core. Then the compound thickens slightly over the next 50 to 200 hours of use to its final consistency designed for long-term stability.

Thats good. Well your Prime95 looks good. Don;t know about your temps though.
