Solved CPU with high temps!

I installed a Quad q6600 on my board and replaced the thermal paste,the issue is that my temps are going very high... 48/50 on idle and 65/70 on full ...
The thermal paste that i applied was white "silicon based"...
And before i applied the cooler had just the preapplied paste and gone nice back then!
I broke one pin (they are very easy to,if we dont have good care) but i fix him with glue,i dunno if this bad temps have something to do with it!

Ok one bent broken pin will do alot of damage
I doubt glue will be a good thing to use on parts like that most likly it will burn up and take everything with it you have a defective chip now so would look into replacing it

Never stick a cpu that has any broken pins into a slot and the contact from the pin that was broken is really broken there is no way to assure you glues it in place for it to be conductive

Best thing is to get a new chip unless you want it to get worse and it will

Also for your sake the pin doesn't stay stuck in the board after you fired it up probally melted the glue and the pin in your cpu slot which will force you to replace that too

I'd guess you didn't really fix him with glue and that you have a poorly mounted heatsink.

That's easy to do even if all 4 pins are good.

I wouldn't expect the thermal paste application to make a major difference as long as you used a decent paste.

I'd recheck all 4 corners of that heatsink mount and get a new pin, rather than try to glue a broken one.

Another thing to consider is which version of the Q6600 you have. There are two "stepping" versions (B3 or G0). The B3 is a 110 watt model and the G0 is 95 watts. The B3 will run a bit hotter. The box it came in should have the number on it.

I used to have one of the B3 models and as I recall, it ran in the mid-to-high 40's at idle (Dell pc with stock Dell heatsink/fan). My current CPU is the Q6700 and it's running right at 40 C as I type.

I dont think the CPU is defective as you say... He work great... and CPU's or work or just dont! Dont exist middle side effects... The problem is probably from the heatsink or poor quality of thermal paste... when i open the case the fan is not on fire,lol... i touch in there and is not even a bit hot...

I think he is a "GO" model,dude!
I have to say too,that he only reach to 75/80s on pcsx2 emulator...
Cause normally he is on 47/50 idle and on proper games for Windows he goes up to 55/60 maybe!
Right now he is on 46 idle... thats a stable temp but not the right temp for idle... a good idle would be 39/40ºC maybe... cause i'm doing nothing more than writing this reply on the web!

I'm saying for me ,I would have never done that and not to mention you must have some steady hands and eyes like a hawk to get that pin exactly where it goes lol

My FX had some bent pins i tryed to carefully move back in place they ended up breaking so i went and got another and returned the other chip and still kept my money

long story short playing 50/50 like that will get you in the end

If they worked good with glue, the manufacturers would make them with glue. The broken pin is your trouble.

Is the broken pin a cooler pin? If yes buy a new cooler that fits the PC (~$30) and throw the old one out.

The thick white thermal paste I've seen looks very difficult to apply thinly. Buy a little tube of Artic Silver 5. Go to their website and they will tell you how to apply it for your CPU.

Use high purity (99%+) isopropyl alcholol and paper coffee filers to clean the old CPU surface. Spend some time and get it perfectly clean without stuff dribbling down the CPU sides. (Note: don't remove the CPU from its clamp when doing this).

Yes is a cooler pin,not a cpu pin... we can name that thing "pushpin" too i guess...
That thing is the worst kind of heatsink ever... they break very easy... and most times you think that shi# is well applied and dont! That pin is well fixed on motherboard but is broken... so,maybe the heatsink dont apply the necessary pressure to dissipate the heat...

Do you think i need to apply new thermal compound or the one that already comes with the heatsink is enough?!

(i bought AGAIN one with 4 push pins,people would think "this dude is stupid or just love his money as Scrooge Macduck!") xD

Yes, the heatsink mounting mechanism is ridiculous, but you have to deal with it.

I'd advise you to remove the motherboard from the case if possible, so you can get better leverage when mounting the heatsink.

Look very closely at all 4 corners of the mount. Look at the motherboard from the bottom side to be sure that all 4 pins have protruded through the motherboard properly and by the same amount.

The pins should "click" into place, but you can't really rely on that. Do a visual inspection.

Sure.

Some people use vodka.

I wouldn't worry about cleaning it at a microscopic level.

Just get the old stuff off with alcohol of some type. I would not obsess about the minute details.

You might go to arcticsilver.com and look at their recommendation for applying paste to that particular CPU.

In some cases, a single BB sized drop is preferred. In other cases, a spaghetti-thin strip is preferred.

You don't have to spread the paste across the surface. Let the pressure of the mounting mechanism and heat do that for you.

The tendency is to use too much paste. When in doubt, resist the impulse to apply more. "More" isn't "better".

It shouldn't be hard to get high purity isopropyl alchol (99+%) from say a Chemist/pharmacist/drug store. I got mine from an electronics supply store. The Artic Silver people sell similar stuff but it probably costs a lot more. I believe low purity may leave a residue and you don't want that after the effort.
Remember the paper coffee filter!

Big deal guys. We know the CPU has stud pressure connectors but it could have been a motherboard socket connection the OP was referring to I suppose. I think he has been given correct guidance and he/she needs to get on with it.

I hope I didn't offend any of you guys. I knew what the op meant when he said he broke the pin, since I have almost broken them as well when re-installing the stock style coolers.

Want to hear one way to remove Artic Silver MX-4 or AS-5? Try a Bounty paper towel! That was after 2yrs. of use for the 2010 application of AS-5 surprisingly.

Lately when wanting to use the first hsf bought but unable to use due to the memory being 1/4" higher and pressing up against the first sink I was seeing 46-48C for an idle temp! Wait a minute when first installed back in 2010 it was seeing 35C for an idle. Sure enough the dust screens despite being totally clean dust free were still hampering the air flow!

The end result of seeing a 1-3C difference between the two pastes and the much lower cpu temps when increasing the air flow into the case! The Phenom II X4 975 now idles at 35C again with a load temp of 37C.

It goes to show the paste and of course just how much paste is applied will make a difference while getting that cooler air in will be the larger factor in keeping temps down.
