 Hi all
this morning I did a really bad decision: I've installed IE9 (with Windows update) though I don't use it. And now I'm paying for this.
I run 7 X64 with no problem at all and I use Firefox 4.
All the IE setup ran well and after the reboot apparently no problem. Untill I tried to open one of my most used program that is Object Dock. In the different custom docks I have tabbed all my programs and each docks pertains to a single work (photography, website, office and so on) so for me it's really usefull.
No way to have it running, only a little part of it runs and I think is the only part without any java "applet". I'm not really sure about it, but only one dock runs and is the tabbed one.
The first way to solve I try, it was the System Restore and I tried in 2 different restore point: the first one before IE 9 and the second 2 days ago. In both situation after the reboot I have this advice:
Code:
System restore did not compete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed.
Details: System restore failed to replace the file (C:\Windows) with its original copy from the restore point.
An unspecified error occurred during System restore (0x80071a90)
You can try System Restore again and choose a different restore point.
If you continue to see this error, you can try an advanced recovery method.
So I tried to uninstall IE 9 through Control panel and the specific uninstaller, I did the reboot and .... same situation.
At that point I decided to use newly System restore and I tried in 2 different restore point: same situation than before.
So now I have no idea :cry: What can I try?
Overall I think the big problem is about system Restore, if for any serious problem I need to use it, at the moment seems to be impossible.
Please any help will be greatly appreciated.
Lio

PS sorry for my bad english:o

Hi Lio, maybe you should try a reinstall of Object Dock to see if that will get you going again. I am not familiar with the program, but Windows sometmes just makes its own mess of things, such as "XXXX has stopped working...."

Thanks for your reply, but I don't want to lose all my settings.
I'd bet the problem lies with ie9 x64's crappy Java script/engine and I hear that many people has the same problem.

Understood Lio. Some software will save your setting for a reinstall, you might see if there is info on this. Good luck buddy.:geek:

Actually you wouldn't be using IE9 x64 even though that was the name of the installer. All normal IE use is still 32 bit with the good JS engine even on windows x64 and having installed "IE x64".

Second. the JS engine has nothing to do with java applets. JS and Java are two COMPLETLEY different things.

More than likely Object Dock was using IE funtionality as a component and now those components have been changed. Try going to the object dock web site and see if they have a fix yet. Ususualy it just requires a recompile wiht the new libraries or a small tweak to fix this kind of thing. But you would have to reinstall a new version. Wheich may or may NOT nix your settings, depends on how well the object dock people write the installer.

hello, I'm back
I solved by myself in a really messy way, but now I have Object Dock working. I've still to see about the restore point, but unfortunately I think that problem is different and probably only casually present in the same moment than the OD crash.
I've used an old OD backup and integrated that backup with the only part still working. A little bit of change to match all in notepad (opening the file .ini) and after a couple of attempt, now it's all OK.
I have now to see for the System Restore.
Thanks to all for your help.
Lio

You probably already made sure of this but if your system restore won't roll back try and run it in safe mode. Reboot your computer and get into your startup option menu, pick safe mode, then try and do the system restore from there. I have had a couple of occasions where that was the only way I was able to get the restore point to complete successfully.

Glad to hear you have the OD working. As for the System Restore try D247's idea to try from Safe Mode. If you are using the IE9 x64 it has really limited functionality, use the X32 version instead.
