deactivate key press search in explorer

is there a way to deactivate searching of files when we press a key in windows 7 when looking at a folder in Explorer?

in XP/ NT in the File List pane : you could quickly go to files that start with a character (or characters if you keyed them in quick)

Scenario: have a folder calls c:\docs\ open in explorer
it has 50+ files
if we know we have a file called quick.txt then you could press q and the first file starting with q would be selected.

in windows 7 it starts a search for files that has q in it and includes other locations in the search too.

is there a way to go back to the old behaviour? or can I atleast tell it only to search in the current folder, no other folders, nor sub folders?

Go to Folder Options > View tab. Then scroll down the list and find "When typing into List View" and select "Select the typed item in the view".

Are you aware that there are two methods of using the Win 7 search facility? I guess you are using the one where you click start and type in the box at the bottom left that reads "Search programs and files". With Explorer open and your chosen folder open type your "q" in the box circled in red on the attached screenshot. Win 7 will then search just that designated folder. You can just navigate in Explorer to one hard drive and search that. I can search just my external drive shown as "K" in the screen shot.

no am using what you suggest in point 2 - i open windows explorer go to c:\docs
and then in the file pane q

but it searches sub folders too.
and if you disable that then there is no way to enable it in when you do want to search sub folders.

i wanted to know if there was a way to deactivate this auto search when you press a letter in file pane.

i jumped from XP to win 7.

on xp when you needed to go a search you had to press the search button or press ctrl-F then you could choose options there.

and if you just pressed a key it would only highlight the first file it would with that name.

tried this but now cant search sub folders ever ... unless i go and change it again. xp could change this per search when you choose to search in the search options ...

well i guess i need to stop pressing keyscause i need to search sub folders more often!
