This thread is so long it has slid off the edge of the earth.

Don't use torrents or P2P in any fashion or you will end up with a bunch of svchost and infections.

this thread wasnt really about the bsods as such, more about the detection weirdness, tho it has sort of lead onto the services issues and curiosity regarding why the usb was flagged in the bsods.

last one l had only happened when l pulled out my TP-Link wireless adapter (which l had issues with) currently using a D-Link which has been more stable but l still cant shake the feeling there is some weirdness within the usb somewhere.. either way if l used safely disconnect when pulling out the adapters l dont get bsods not sure it will happen again but it was definitely a strange issue as the original issues were ram related and bitdefender was being flagged, the last couple were usb/wireless but lve changed 2 adapters since then.

as for p2p, its hosted on a remote server.. and l only download from trustworthy sites.. that is to say private trackers run by friends where we transfer large projects and personal files, granted it may have been easier to just get a server and do it that way but with space limitations it makes it easier to use redundant servers and have things hosted over a few and grab stuff when we want it, suffice to say all the content is legit (basically put, not pirated content, just databases and project stuff for the servers and sites we run) with no chance of viruses since the content is private between a group of peeps l know personally.

now l have no clue where the annoyance lays.. another instance of svchost just reached 800meg tho before l could see what was running under it it halved in size, and just a second ago it shrank to around 30meg.

no idea what it was..

Where you running any Windows Updates ? ... No clue in the Event Viewer ? ...

none l can see, was too quick to really make sense of. that said since the hotfix and last windows update when idling things in general seem to be much better than usual apart from what l caught yesterday. (or earlier today.. kinda worked through the night lol and just got up, more of a night person anyways).

also (touch wood) havent had any extra detection sounds since the windows update yet.

as long as it doesnt keep on coming and going l'll be happy, l wish process explorer had a ram usage column off the properties > services tab it would make it so much easier to pin down ram hogs more definitively imho because most of this issue lve assumed based on common issues.

Resource Monitor might give you a better clue ...

the integrated resource monitor? if so it wasnt of much help as it only looked at the services not sub processes under services like svchost.

Service host will constantly be changing as things are being done on your computer.
Watching them and worrying will do nothing but give you gray hair.
The same with memory. Windows 7 is constantly changing that also.

l agree, but the part that confused me the most was the jump and fall in usage, lve not seen a system before just jump from 200meg shy of a gig usage within seconds maybe a 100meg but never a jump as large as earlier..

l purchased a bit of hardware that allows me to backup my own games and got my friend to rechip a console, so l can play games from an external drive. its sad ppl use such consoles for piracy methods but since the change in the laws regarding backups l can now legally backup games and since lm not an online gamer l dont need to worry about a bricked console... like l said l hate scratching DVDs so being able to play from a hard drive means l can store my disks and play from externals meaning less space taken up by my collection and l really need the space.
