Downgrading Windows 7 to Win XP (Without Windows.old)

May I chime in and say ,7 was installed on your system for a reason

Going back to XP will be more of a challenge cause the drivers support is no longer there also you would have to search for legacy drivers to get some of the coponents or apps to work

Im no sure what version of 7 you are using but i would look toward upgrading it with xp support the business copies persay

that will allow you to run xp and 7 without conflicts mind you this would be a better option then going scratch back to xp

WINDOW 7 gives you choices my friend http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/8057-dual-boot-installation-windows-7-xp.html?filter[3]=Installation and Setup this is dual boot i advise you to read this to the full extent

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/8247-windows-xp-mode-install-setup.html?filter[2]=Programs Features this is also a xp set up Im not tottally sure this is where you want to be but atleast you got some direction good luck and im sure other more Experienced members will offer maybe a better solution then I

Do you have a working CD drive or just a DVD drive?

Follow these steps exactly to get XP to boot: How to Boot your Computer from a Bootable CD or DVD - Boot to CD

Or use the one-time BIOS Boot Menu key to trigger CD drive to boot.

If no prompt appears to "Press any key..." then it is not bootable CD. Try cleaning it. Or find another XP installer or ISO to burn to CD for the exact same version as the XP Product Key your friend gave you.

Did you try the steps I wrote out to boot the CD correctly?

Are you getting a prompt to "Press any key to boot CD" after setting CD drive to boot first in BIOS or using one-time BIOS boot menu key?

If your friend gave you a legitimate retail XP Product Key then you don't need to buy another copy of XP, just locate an installer for that version.
