Solved DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE (BSOD) when going into sleep mode.

My laptop hard drive died in January 2013. I took it in to a local computer store where the hard drive was replaced and restored from the boot disks. My files were reloaded from a back-up created on my WD Passport External HD. The same day I picked it up I started experiencing the DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE (BSOD). I took it back in to them and all they said was it was a driver issue and it probably won't happen again. It has continued to happen; at first intermittently and now more consistently when trying to go into sleep mode.

I have read over a lot of the different threads and see that it could be a variety of issues. There was a Consumer IR device flagged in the Device Manager so I uninstalled and reinstalled the corresponding Windows update and that problem has been resolved but the BSOD is still happening. Nothing else is flagged in the device manager.

Please HELP! I just don't know what else to check.

This BSOD is caused by Atheros AR5009 WiFi Adapter Driver.

Hey guys, Well...I thought it was fixed. I think it happened again this afternoon. I didn't actually see the BSOD because of the setting I changed as per the instructions but when I went to wake up my computer, I got the screen that askes if you want to do a Normal Start up or Safe Mode. That's what it started doing the other day after I changed the setting in the Advanced Settings as per the instructions. I ran another Dx. It is uploaded for your review. Thank you in advance for your help.

It appears that the new driver is not installed properly. Let us try it differently.

First, download the network card driver from manufactuer's website, Drivers for Atheros AR5009 and Windows 7.
Then uninstall the existing driver, and reinstall the downloaded driver:

  1. Click the Start Button, type "devmgmt.msc" (without quotation marks) in the Start Menu Search box and press Enter.
  2. Double click to expand "Network adaptors".
  3. Right click Qualcomm Atheros AR5009 802.11a/g/n WiFi Adapter and click Uninstall.
  4. Check "Delete driver software for this device" check box, click OK.
  5. Install the downloaded one manually. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/97061-driver-install-device-manager.html
Hopefully this time the new driver will take place.

Well...it's finally done. I had this page open but I forgot to open the manual install instructions before I uninstalled the old driver and of course I lost my internet connection...oops. :o I think I managed to figure it out anyway by right clicking and selecting "Scan for hardware changes", then it did its thing and installed the new driver...at least I think it was the new driver. We'll see. I'm going to give it a couple of days before I mark it solved, just in case. Thank you again for all your help. You guys are lifesavers! :grouphug:

Ok, this is really getting on my last nerve now! It is still doing it. I pulled up the properties in the device manager and its still the old driver. I uninstalled it again and tried to install the new one but it won't let me. When I click on DPInst64.exe which is the install its saying it can not complete the Device Driver Installation Wizard because it can't find any drivers (that is with the other driver still installed). When it's uninstalled, it says the same thing. When I try to update it, it says its already up to date. When I try to manually do it, it doesn't show up in the folder list. I'm lost....please help before I toss this stupid thing out the window!

Lets make sure you have the correct driver. Go to the Support Downloads webpage for your exact HP model number, including extension. Download and install the driver from there. HP may have modified the driver as often is the case on laptops.

Extract the driver, rightclick on Setup to Run as Admin. If that doesn't work go to the driver in Device Manager, click Driver tab, then Update Driver, Browse to the driver file to see if it will pick it up.

If this fails, uninstall driver in the Device Manager>Wireless Driver>Driver tab, including the software when prompted. Plug in by ethernet cable, connect to network, run all Important and Optional Windows Updates repeatedly until it delivers your driver.

If you need help finding the driver let us know the full model number.

Thank you for helping us, Greg :)

As far as I can say, it is Atheros AR5009.

ITEM | VALUE
Name | [00000007] Qualcomm Atheros AR5009 802.11a/g/n WiFi Adapter
PNP Device ID | PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_ 002 A&SUBSYS_3041103C&REV_01\4&35546A2D&0&0028
Driver | c:\windows\system32\drivers\athrx.sys (10.0.0.67, 3.51 MB (3,678,720 bytes), 6/20/2012 10:42 AM)

From the PnP Device ID, is it Chip Description: PCI to VL98 Bridge ?

I suggested him Drivers for Atheros AR5009 and Windows 7 ... but it is not getting installed. :(

On factory OEM we need to stick with the Windows Updates or PC maker's Drivers. HP may have modified the driver.

DV7's have many different model extensions and even when narrowed the Support Downloads webpage may have several makers listed, so then he'd want to choose the Atheros.

His problem may have originally been importing the driver from elsewhere, or getting the wrong driver from Updates.

Make sure to always enable Automatically get recommended drivers and updates for your hardware (Step 3) so that Updates scans deeper into Devices and services Plug N Play.

Ok, the issue has been resolved. I waited a while just to make sure. I updated the drivers from the HP website and I uninstalled the antivirus that the computer store put on when they replaced my hard drive. I think it was a combination of the both causing the problem. Thank you for everyone's help.
