DVD transfer to new iPad4

Forgive me if this is in the wrong place, but after searching, I can't see what I may need.

I have just purchased an iPad4 64Gb and want to transfer some of my own DVD films to the iPad for use when on holiday. I am not technically minded, so please be talk in simple terms.

First of all, I have downloaded Handbrake and have VLC media player, but am not at all familiar with their operation. I did try to do this once, but the film came all jumbled up and no use at all.

I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit on my PC. Also have iTunes and iCloud loaded on PC.

Hope someone can help in a very simple way.

Are these commercial disc you own?

If so, they are jumbled because they are encrypted. You need to decrypt them before you can recode them. You need something like AnyDVD to decrypt, and rip the content of the DVD to your HardDrive.
Once on your Hard Drive, you can use Handbrake to recode to DVD to a file for your iPad.

You'll want to use a MP4 container and AAC (stereo) audio.



Keep in mind, while doing this for your own use at home or on your iPad from discs you own may be OK...
Sharing, Giving out or selling the copies would be illegal and you can get in trouble for that. Just so you know.

These are all DVD's I have purchased and I only want to do this for my own use on my iPad. Not having anything to do with this sort of thing. I was not aware that I needed to copy them to my hard drive first, I just tried to copy using the handbrake software that I downloaded and followed the instruction on a video I saw about handbrake. That said open and record. What they should have said is copy first then use the handbrake but many videos just 'assume' that everyone knows a lot more than they do.

I appreciate your help and will look into this a little more, but would never copy DVD's for anyone else's use as I am aware that it would be illegal and breaking copyright.

There are other methods of decrypting the discs. But, I have found that anydvd is really the best one.
Its worth it in the long run if youll be recoding lots of DVDs.

Im not 100% sure about other methods, but technically you can decrpt on the fl;y with AnyDVD. Meaning, you can run it, and recode the the movie straight from the disc drive while it decrpypts it. But, I highly recommend you just copy to your HD first. And everything (during the setup/recode process) will move along smoother and faster.

Yes.
Depending what you are using to recode the video with, some will not even make the attempt and tell you its protected ending the job there.
Others, encode as they see the signal resulting in a file that looks similar to a TV station on a cablebox or satelitte thats scrabbled.

Thank you all for your help, but I have now found a superb software that I have purchased, called DVD Catalyst, which works perfectly and has very detailed instructions for the buyer.
It also has a superb backup service as I did query a couple of times by e-mail and had a reply within hours.

The question of copyright is surely that the original material is protected from being copied for the purpose of gain. This is not the case where someone buys a record, a DVD or anything if the copy made is simply for their own use and not for distribution or sale. This is the case here and no laws are, or will be broken. Therefore the copyright has not been broke, or cracked as mentioned.

Alex from where I sit behind this keyboard I have no way of knowing what the purpose is. It could be as the OP states or it could be for a number of other reasons. The people who own the copyright had it encrypted for a reason. That reason to my understanding is so you can't copy it.

I hear what you say about copyright, but from behind this keyboard, in my opinion and that of many others, the copy of such material solely for own use, is considered to be 'fair use' of any purchased DVD's or CD's, which is the case here. I understand that in the US it has also been considered so and to my knowledge, no person has ever been prosecuted, or ever will be, if it can be shown that the copy made is clearly for own use or backup purposes.
The encryption is simply a commercial process that manufactures have added in recent years and breaking the encryption is not illegal.
