Error 80073712 when trying to update to SP1

I can't find two versions of MS Office. I have MS Works that came with the computer then I installed the MS Office 2007 that my son got when he was in college, hence perhaps that is the student version. Inside the MS Office folder is a file for MC Office 60 day trial online. That is the only other odd looking program in the MS Office folder. The rest are the Office suite of programs.

It would be better to use Macrium, its more reliable than MS's.

If so uninstall it from programs/features

Ok. Will have to work on the image in the next day or so. I do still have the MS Office CDs so should be able to re-install them later.

Now I don't want to be jumping in on what Roy has suggested but if it were me I would use the Pro version if you have the key for it as it contains more features. Having said that the Student version is one I used for many years before getting 2010 and I never had any problems with it and in all honesty it is more user friendly than the 2010 version.

The one thing to remember is that if you have the original package ie the DVD then they (Microsoft) will only let you install it for about three times max and then they chop you off at the knees. I found this out having to do clean installs on my old Toshiba and of course having to install the Office again which means you then again activate the Office. They then pick that up and in my case they denied me installing the Office.
I think you might agree that what they did is really unfair seeing one paid good money for the software.

But they have shot themselves in the foot now as I use the free version of LibreOffice on the majority of my machines - which I find just as good as Office 2010

Sorry for the rant but I thought I would fill you in on what Microsoft are like with this situation should you find yourself in a similar bind.

I completed the mirroring, uninstalled MS Office Home and Student, rebooted and tried installing SP1. Still failed. I did notice that a MS Live program was installed on July 5, 2010 which was one of the suspect dates based on when this error began appearing. I uninstalled that program as well but SP1 would still not install.

Guess I'm at the Install Win 7 with SP1 point. How do I do that?

Thanks for your help. I really appreciated all your ideas, suggestions and interest shown to fix my problem. Unfortunately, I've run out of time to resolve this so had to make some decisions. This morning I bit the bullet and upgraded to Win 10. Not really what I wanted to do, but I have a Laptop that runs Win 10 so now both PCs have it. Once I upgraded, I was able to install the software I needed which started this hunt. Thanks again.

No problems Darl I think 10 is ok myself though I have to change the GUI so that it looks like 7 and I do have it on my main laptop and one of my desktops too. Soon I am hoping to dual boot this machine but have to get out of this hospital first

See pic of my 10 desktop and if you want something similar just get rid of the default rubbish and use the search box and type This PC (Computer) Control Panel etc etc and then just pin them to Start menu
