Solved explorer crashes

Another suggestion would be to check for updates for your graphics driver. Unfortunately I know little about Intel Graphics drivers as I use AMD.

already did the reboot.. sorta assumed it the best course of action, have run the installer its download all except the 2015 runtimes for some reason.. as for my graphics, it seems lm using the most up to date. at least in respects to the fact that the newer driver is only for Win10.

(but considering l have this issue on my laptop as well, tho lm not sure if its related l'll do the same over there as well but l will pop off now to install the 2010 C++ runtimes as its the only ones l dont see).

well lve just run the explorer.exe monitoring to my laptop (as lm doing my weekly update check and VPS backups) have also uninstalled all C++ stuff there and reinstalled using the methods previously mentioned tho downloaded both 64/32bit versions and installed them of the 2015 versions so l should see pretty much what you would expect.

will keep the programs around for further notes for future install/reinstalls. tho for the time being l'll keep monitoring explorer.exe to see if any more crashes occur on either system (one of the main reasons l dont suspect gfx is my PC uses intel drives and my laptop used AMD ones).

================

EDIT: as previously stated l setup the same monitoring of my laptops explorer.exe (the only difference being that l uninstalled and reinstalled C++ runtimes with the methods stated within this topic), its giving off the same event log error that was given by my PC (previously stated within this topic) however lm able to provide the crash dump of my laptops explorer.exe dmp file quicker this time.

might be interesting to see if there is a common element.. tho l will note both crashes were while l was using teracopy to copy files at the time (this is the comment element between tonights crashes, tho l have had my PC give off an explorer crash while browsing once). lve attached the dump file from my laptop (the previously posted one was from my PC tho its already been uploaded l have uploaded both noting which of my systems they came from the PC one being the one you have already seen, tho the PC one is prior to reinstall of C++ the laptop one was created after running the same update/reinstalls of C++) l wonder if there is a common element.

=======
EDIT 2: l was randomly looking around thinking about common elements.. and l came across a user who was having the same issue (there are quite a few of them) however this specific user had something in common with me.. namely Google Drive, and truth be told l dont remember many crashes before my usage of ninite updater which l use to update multiple things but the one thing l can say is both systems use google drive (before l wouldnt leave it running on my PC because my ram usage kept on growing but now with 32GB it doesnt bother me) either way l have disabled right click context menus for google drive as mentioned here, just scroll up for the rest of the thread, lm hoping the explorer crash doesnt happen any more but will see how things go, tho either way it will be interesting to compare both my laptop and PCs crashes.

Actually I can only read one of those dumps. The PC one is the same as before. The Laptop one cannot be read for some reason. If you get another dump from your laptop try uploading it and I will see if I can open it.

RE: Google Drive. I've seen explorer crash issues before when users have Google Drive but personally I don't use it.

Some research suggests that you might try the following:

1. Right-click the google drive icon in the system tray and select preferences.
2. Towards the bottom in the category Misc, uncheck the 3rd box that says Show file sync status icons. Apply changes and you should be good. No reboot needed.

Also I remember reading something about problems with corrupt desktop.ini files contained in some synched folders causing issues and the solution was to delete the desktop.ini files from each folder but I cannot be 100% certain that I remember correctly.

have taken the first steps already with regards to google drive, but lm wondering if there is an easier way to search and remove all instances of desktop.ini.. l have updated my file and folder options.. however it still seems l cant search hidden files and folders even with the options lve edited, is there something l can run that can automate the process of removing just the possibly offending file? because it seems there are an annoying amount of desktop.ini files.. lve cleared 100 of them and lm not even making a dent in my synced files (l use it to sync databases between my devices along with other things like things which make it easier to access over the network).

You can try this. I don't know if it will work on Google Drive but if explorer can see the drive then it should work.

Usage: Extract zipped file and run it. It's portable so deos not need installing. Go to the "include list" tab and clear the entire list. Then add the following:

*desktop.ini

Save and Close.Leave the "exclude list" alone.

Select only your Google Drive from the list of drives and run a scan. Check the results list and delete those desktop.ini files if you are happy with the results.

still a slight pain as l could select in bulk but managed to clear them more painlessly than one at a time.. will do the same on the laptop when l next drop onto it..

however lm still finding it strange why the laptop dump was an issue.. did nothing more than set it up as l did on the PC.. the only thing l can say is when the laptops explorer crashes the system almost locks up until the service restarts, its like you move the mouse and it sorta jumps in slow motion.

I just can't open that dump to read it. Maybe some corruption in the file or something. The other one was fine. Like I said if you get another crash try uploading the latest dump.

indeed, l only came across the settings someone used to stop the possible issue, it didnt hurt to extend the possible solution to the desktop.ini files.

You're right. Fresh ones will most likely be created by explorer anyway but if any were problematic - they're gone.

its possible, tho l did take a gander at the contents of the ini files, and they seemed to contain the google sync path within them so lm not so sure.. truth be told it seemed the only folders that had desktop.ini's in them tended to be ones l shared between other users. but quite a large portion of folders l do share between a group of ppl.

just an update.. touch wood.. so far everything has been running fine with no crashes.. however l dont wish to talk too soon, havent had a chance to mess around on the laptop yet however will keep things under observation for the time being, tho hopefully l have found the culprit, tho l did disable a few extra context menus as well (as there was suggestions on my googling that suggested that context menus could be part of the issue..).

after keeping things under observation for a couple of weeks now lve not as of yet had any explorer crashes on either my PC or Laptop, not any BSODs yet on my laptop.. for the time being l will mark this issue as solved.

though l am curious, does UKV add extra context menu options to right click? l recently noticed force delete and file information options when l right click files and folders, no idea where it came from and l havent exactly installed anything apart from program and windows updates for stuff lve already got installed. be nice to get rid of the options seeing as l need a licence to use them.

Sorry for the late reply. I've been away for a couple of weeks.

RE: UVK context menu entries. You can get rid of them but the "Force Delete" option comes in handy sometimes.

Anyway here is a UVK script to remove them. Download the zipped file and extract it and run it.

Altenatively launch UVK and choose "Run Scripts" from the Welcome Screen and then "Import Script From File" then browse to the extracted file and run it.

Contents of file:

Code:
<UVKCommandsScript>

##### UVK Fix List #####

<SDelete>

<FileContextMenu> | File Information | C:\Program Files\UVK - Ultra Virus Killer\UVK_en.exe | Ultra Virus Killer | 71D6FB15B3388291AA82015D98FFB8B4 | Signed :  Carifred.com

<FileContextMenu> | Force Delete | C:\Program Files\UVK - Ultra Virus Killer\UVK_en.exe | Ultra Virus Killer | 71D6FB15B3388291AA82015D98FFB8B4 | Signed :  Carifred.com

###### end of Fix List ######

RE: UVK right click context menu "File Information" - you don't need a license to get the report. Just launch UVK and choose "Tools & Tweaks" then swith to the "File Tools" tab then browse to the file that you need to check.

RE: UVK Force Delete right click context menu. You can Force Delete files using your own scripts or else via the "Delete Files & Folders" button on the Welcome Screen.
