Hey guys,

So in the last few weeks, I have come across a rather perplexing issue with my Toshiba Satellite laptop. I have it hooked up to an external display via HDMI and that display works perfectly fine, but the laptop monitor is extremely dark, to the point where it is just barely possible to make out what is on the display. I know this is not a hardware issue as the laptop display works perfectly fine in Arch Linux, and I have tried multiple attempts at remedying the issue including adjusting the brightness with the function keys and re installing/updating the driver for the integrated graphics. I have also tried restoring to the earliest system restore image and that hasn't helped either

Hi thehoppingbunny and welcome to Seven Forums.

Have you tried adjusting the brightness of the screen without using the function keys?
(i.e adjusting the brightness in power options?)

When did the screen start turn extremely dark? Can you remember any updates or major changes you made to your laptop?

When you say it works perfectly fine in Arch Linux, did you have just the Linux OS installed or Windows 7 as well?

The problem could be the highly unlikely event that the driver for your integrated graphics could have a bug or issue. Have you tried rolling your graphics driver back to the previous version? Did you have to reinstall the graphics driver on the Linux OS?

normally id say your backlight has gone, but the fact it works in linux is an odd one.

does this happen when its plugged into and or unplugged from the mains?

Thanks for the responses. I did a bit of tinkering in the bios just now and it turns out there is a setting doesnt play nicely with Windows. I went to Advanced>System Config>Power on Display, and set the default to System LCD. Everything works normally now
