It wouldn't run normally without color corruption, just gives a black screen but with compatibiliy modes on, it gives an error saying it is in compatibility mode and refuses to start. How retarded, why would it not let you run it in a mode which fixes it.

Anyone know a way around this issue? The game is giving the error, not Windows.

Also, input doesn't work when the game does run, jeyboard and mouse fail to work and you need to reboot to use the computer.

Well after toying around with it for while I finally got it to work last night. Recently I bought the Fallout Trilogy and noticed that the only two games that didn't have the rainbow graphics glitch were the HD version of Fallout 1 and Tactics. So after playing with the f1_res.ini I was able to fix it by changing the main section to this:
[MAIN]
##################################################################################################################

# if AUTO_SCRN_SIZE = 0 - Screen Width and Height are set with SCR_WIDTH & SCR_HEIGHT.
# if AUTO_SCRN_SIZE = 1 - Screen Width and Height are set to current desktop resolution.
AUTO_SCRN_SIZE = 0

#Set the screen resolution here
SCR_WIDTH = 640
SCR_HEIGHT = 480

#Set the number of colours here
# 8 for 8bit(original)
# 16 for 16bit colour(loading screens don't show in this mode)
COLOUR_BITS = 16

For Fallout 2 I was able to do the same thing by installing the HD pack here:No Mutants Allowed :: Files
and changing the Main section in the f2_res.ini to this:
[MAIN]
;##################################################################################################################
;Set the screen resolution here
SCR_WIDTH=640
SCR_HEIGHT=480

;Set the number of colours here
; 8 for 8bit(original)
; 16 for 16bit colour (set only if your not using Sfall with graphics modes 4 or 5)
COLOUR_BITS=16

;Position of the Hi-Res Settings Button in the Main-Menu: valid positions are 1-7.
HI_RES_BUTTON_POS=5

Hope this helps you guys get these amazing games to work correctly.

Fallout2 WORKS, the intro vids and game are rainbow free - i want to have your babies...can finally play on my mini9 again, without having to install xp

Edit: Using the touchscreen to play the game is crazy though, dont think its mapping the X/Y coords to the game correctly :)

Fix for Fallout 1

in the main directory ddraw.ini

Editing this using the constants supplied in the files works, no need to run in compatability mode, but it kind of screws up the other windows and the mouse is "stuck" inside fallout 1 till you alt-tab out of it.

Simply Fix to Older Games

Everyone stop what you are doing, shut up, and let me share with you what I just learned!!!

You have to make a simple .bat file to CLOSE WINDOWS EXPLORER because the task bar in will try to push through the video codecs and such in a lot of older games, and 90% of the time, the game doesn't like this!

This is the one I used for Starcraft: Brood Wars 1.16.1 -

taskkill /f /IM explorer.exe
C:\"Program Files (x86)\StarCraft"\"StarCraft.exe"
start explorer.exe

So for my Fallout 2 install, it looks like -

taskkill /f /IM explorer.exe
C:\"Program Files (x86)\BlackIsle"\"Fallout2"\"FALLOUT2.exe"
start explorer.exe

(Mind you I'm using Windows 7 x64 Home Premium, 2.2Ghz Dual Core, 4GB RAM, and an NVIDIA GeForce G210M video card)

To make a Batch File (.bat), simply open Notepad and paste EXACTLY what I've given you into it, then go to "Save As". Change the "Save As Type" from "Text Document (*.txt)" to "All Files", name the file something like "Fallout 2 Explorer Kill", then save the file to your desktop. Double click it, play your game, and ENJOY!

Hope this saves many people hours of searching every forum at the end of the internet for a fix, at least to these two games! All other things that you've changed in compatibility tabs and graphics card menus should be able to be put back to a default or desired setting.

Thats idiotic, and you clearly dont know how to use the command line. What your command up there does, is actually: "Ill kill this program, then when this other program runs, ill start it again." Thats absurd. Also, nearly everyone has their own path to the file, so just copying that will leave 90 % of the people with an error message. and i see this is your only post, so you apparently joined here to tell us something that you havent even come up your self.
shame on you man.

Hey, numbnuts! Let me hit you with something! First off, if you would TRY AND USE THAT BATCH FILE, you'd see that Explorer doesn't start back up until you exit the game, which is EXACTLY what it's supposed to do to keep the taskbar from messing up your colors. Second, I'd assume that if you're going to TRY AND USE A BATCH FILE OFF SOME RANDOM WEBSITE, you probably have enough common sense to change the C:/ to a G:/ if that's your primary drive or anything else stupid like that, and JUST BECAUSE YOU RUN YOUR COMPUTER LIKE A MORON OR HAVE LINUX INSTALLED doesn't mean everyone else does. I would bet you that one of those two lines, in point of fact, WOULD point to 90% of the viewer's game directories. And lastly, no, that original idea wasn't mine, put I figured I'd be helping by adding it to the first post that usually come up on Google for helping people with this problem. SUCK IT COOLNESS!

Thank you Sarael

You're a genius! Or well ok you said you didn't come up with it but you're at least an angel for sharing this with us!!! I had to tweak this a little bit (but yes as you said if one isn't totally stupid one can manage that *grin*) and I can now fiiiiinally run Fallout 2 without rainbow colours!!!! Cos nothing else worked for me and I tried it all... thanks so much once again! You saved my holidays hihihi.

I havn't tried your batch yet but regardless, closing explorer.exe worked.

Thankyou good sir, now I have something to do tommorow. +rep.

EDIT: Your batch doesn't work for me because it just reopens it immediatly as the game opens. I've instead opted to make two batch files to turn it off and on.

Sorry for being rather harsh to anyone, but I'm still in Afghanistan for like 3 more weeks then I'm finally going home. I was just super pissed that my games wouldn't play so I took a slow day to figure out why they hell they were acting that way. All I did was a put a few things together I found here and there and try and make them easier to follow. Hope you all have a good New Year!

Actually explorer wipe helps, Im using Systweak Advanced System Optimizer 3 - the useful Game Optimizer sub program of its and it does kill all unwanted including explorer and FO2 without explorer is okay whereas without the prog I have rainbows oohlala :sarc:.
