Hi All,
Firstly thanks for reading, I wanted to build a new system some time ago but circumstances have pretty much stopped that for now so I have decided to just update a few things in my old work horse starting with the hard drive, I have purchased a Samsung SSD 840 along with W7 Pro 64bit. I assume I just unplug my existing drives and plug this one into sata 1 and install the OS ?? or do I, is there a procedure I need to be aware of first, I.e. bios settings etc ?
Thanks for any advice as I am a total noob with SSD's, it came with a disk also, do I need this ?
Cheers,
V.

Hello Vale,

Yep, you would do the same as if it was a HDD. One thing to check is to make sure that you have AHCI/SATA enabled in your BIOS for the best performance. This would be the same for any SATA hard drive (HDD/SSD) though.

Hope this helps, :)
Shawn

This is a 6Gb device. If you have any 6Gb port on the mobo, use that. Keep all disks disconnected whilst you install Win7 on the SSD. Here are a few more tips (even if you do not transfer the OS):

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/149969-ssd-install-transfer-operating-system.html

I would first predefine an active, aligned, primary partition on the SSD and install into that. Gets you away from the dreaded 100MB system partition and makes imaging later a lot easier.

Just run these cmd commands for your SSD and direct the installer to that partition. It is all explained in the tutorial I linked.

Diskpart
List disk

Select disk n (where n is the number that was given for your SSD in List disk)
Clean
Create partition primary align=1024
Format fs=ntfs quick
Active
Exit

Yes, that's it. When you want to boot from the SSD, you will have to change the bootorder in the BIOS.

Once you got the OS on the SSD running, come back. Then we'll discuss how you can cleanup the HDD and best use it for data storage.
