Hi,
Recently (twice now) my laptop has ran chkdsk on startup automatically. This has never happened before and also recently on the 'starting windows' screen my hard drive is in heavy usage and takes a while for it to get to the 'welcome' screen.

I ran disk defrag like a week ago and the chkdsk did say it freed up some volume bitmap or something and I get the feeling there's an error in my C drive.

Is there any way to check? Is it a virus or something? I hope this isn't the beginning of the end for my laptop!

Thanks!

Just to update, I ran a manual chkdsk /f /r /b and I got 4kb bad sectors, is this bad? I mean i read around that this is minor but marks the beginning of the demise of a hard drive.

Also, I decided to run a hitachi windft diagnostic on my Toshiba hard drive (as Toshiba don't have a diag tool) and interestingly no hard drives showed up in the program!

Finally, I ran HD Tune and I've uploaded a screens of it as I don't know how to decipher the results lol, would be great if someone could tell me the status of my drive.

Thanks!

That's not a good sign -- frequent forced CHKDSK runs. I had a similar problem and ignored it. Within two weeks, my drive was so damaged that the WD diags failed.

If it were me, I would look into getting a replacement drive as soon as possible.

Thanks for the reply and damn the signs are ominous then.

Before i ran manual chkdsk i was getting a lot of 'The device, \Device\Harddisk0\DR0, has a bad block' errors in event viewer but after running it they've stopped, i don't know if thats a good sign or?

I have the same probleme and solved it by JUST running on the battery at starting. Then I put the plug in again ofcourse. I don't understand it but it works.

Any and all unusual signs from the hard disk should be taken seriously, even if they do not effect normal operation. These could be a sign that the drive is failing and you need to backup all important files now while it is still possible. Any delays may make this much more difficult if not impossible. Actually you should have a backup of important files before problems develop.

You are lucky to have a warning. Drives often fail with no warning whatsoever.

Above all those mentioned I think its worth to secure your laptop for malwares/viruses.
There is a thread similar to your problem maybe it helps you. What triggers a chkdsk? - Super User
