How can I get my usb drivers working?

What is your motherboard brand and model?
If you can find a 32 bit PCI card it will most likely work for you. The PCI and USB busses are powered separately.
Here's some diagrams.

If you have a serial port you can get adaptors for USB and PS2 Mice and keyboards and because it is going over the serial port your USB problem will not affect it.

If you have a PS2 port, try a PS2 keyboard.

I just bought a pci to ps/2 card but it doesn't fit the slot! Even though the system came with 64 bit Win 7 installed, the motherboard pci slot only allows for a 32 bit card. The only other cards I can find online that would fit have usb ports on them in addition to the ps/2 ports which makes me think they won't work either...

Is this what you bought?
PCI USB + PS2 CONTROLLER CARD - 2 Port USB 2.0 & 2 Port: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics

Those will fit any desktop MOBO.

@Britton I can't seem to quickly find a model number for the board. It seems to just be a Dell built board for a Studio XPS 9000. Here's a picture of it and a list of what's on it.

@Pooch no I do not have a serial port. I went through all the old computers at my parents house and found a serial port on an old 486 machine but it was too old. My PC had not connections for it.

@theog those cards won't work. The ridges have 2 notches at the bottom. I need one with only one notch because my available slot only has one notch. Britton's diagram uptop shows it nicely.

It will fit in the little white ports that you have on your MB (PCIe) if you have the adaptor for PS2 then yes it should work, but I can't guarantee it
A PCIe card for USB might also work, if you were to go for a USB3 variant it would also be useful afterwards and perhaps the better buy, but again I cannot guarantee it would work given your present problem.

Yea, I have one adapter. I guess I will give it a try and order it. On one hand I just want to reinstall Windows, but I can't stand a problem that can't be solved.

It is a good idea to find a solution in case the problem happens again, that said you can also make an image backup when it is working again.

Did you see I added more to my last post?

Thanks jasv2, the documentation link showed no pics for me, but the text did show you do have the PCI slot. Odd thing, my PCI slots have space for a one-groove card and all the cards I searched for have 2 grooves.
Your good news is you have multiple PCIe-X1 slots to use as well.

Below is a picture of a PCI Net Card with 2 notches, which will still fit a PCI slot.

Thanks Theog! I've not used a PCI card for awhile and didn't realize they have two slots. I just looked at my old ones and they DO have the two slots as in your illustration. A mind is a terrible thing to lose:confused:

I've become unfamiliar with pci cards too. I guess we can forget things when everything is going well. I ordered a pci express serial card and it should arrive day after tomorrow. I hope it gets me in so I can see what the real problem is. Until then, I'm going to play around with a copy of Hiren's Boot Disc.

As Richard has already posted, 80070005 means Access Denied but, the issue was caused when iTunes was uninstalled. As far as I know, Dell installs the usb drivers using an .inf file. I've not used an .inf to install drivers during the System Recovery add drivers phase.
What I do know is that it should be present in Windows\inf\usb.inf
And, there is also the usbport.inf, at the same location.
IIRC, they both need to be installed.
Here's reply I got to your issue.

hi there:)
have you tried this >>>

  • switch pc off
  • un-plug from wall charger
  • pull mains cable out from pc
  • press and hold the power button on pc for 5-10 seconds
  • re plug cable and power up pc

what this does is resets the motherboard the other way is to take the battery out on the motherboard leave out for a few minutes then put back in and switch on.

in your first post you state "The Dell driver site for my system does not distribute usb drivers and I can not seem to find any drivers that are installable from the system recovery add drivers utility. It seems to require a certain type of install or driver file"
can you not use the service tag for your pc on the dell site to get updates/drivers for your machine? i had problems with my dell running xp and i punched my service tag in and away i went downloading and installing the drivers i needed.
