How can I get my usb drivers working?

I'm sure it could use an update, if not I would at least like to reinstall the chipset drivers but I don't know how any of that could be achieved being locked out of windows with no input devices

The mystery here is the fact that jasv2's USB keyboard and mouse are working in BIOS, when Windows starts, they die with no power. Also work in Linux.

@jasv2, If you do end up having to reinstall software, any setting will be lost and you are at square one with them. That's the "easy" part, it is personal data that can't be recovered if lost. Been there done that too.

@Theog, OP was going to install a PCI/PS2 card and try those devices with PS2 instead of USB.

As Richard has already posted, 80070005 means Access Denied but, the issue was caused when iTunes was uninstalled. As far as I know, Dell installs the usb drivers using an .inf file. I've not used an .inf to install drivers during the System Recovery add drivers phase.
What I do know is that it should be present in Windows\inf\usb.inf
And, there is also the usbport.inf, at the same location.
IIRC, they both need to be installed.

Thanks Britton, I have someone with the exact same pc sending me those inf files. I'll let you know how it goes.

It was looking very hopeful but unfortunately it quickly ends in an error saying the drivers could not be installed. I tried installing the files in both orders but no luck.

Just had an idea, if thhis other computer has the files mentioned, try a simple copy to the same folder on yours. I don't have any clue if that will work, but no harm will be done if they don't and you can delete them if no use. I don't know what the IIRC is.

Yes, I think I will get a copy of the inf and driver folders from that other dell machine and just replace mine with it. But I fear there are some usb registry settings somewhere that are set to off. I can still edit my registry using a bootable mini windows xp on a recovery disk but I don't know where to look for the settings

I installed a serial pci card with a ps2 adapter and it didn't work.

I went in through Linux and deleted security software since I have not been able to do a system restore, possibly due to security programs forcing restrictions. I went to system restore from the installation dvd and noticed the restore point before itunes removal is a Java 6 update 24 installation. If I select the Java point it shows Java 6 update 24 and LibUSB-Win32-0.1.12.2.0.1.12.2 will be deleted and iTunes and Java 6 update 20 will be restored.

Why is/was my LibUSB being affected and is that the problem?? Every restore point I have has LibUSb being deleted if use it (if system restore even worked)

when you say you deleted security software do you mean you deleted the file? installed software installed with installer need to be un-installed with a un-installer.

well yea i dont have the ability to uninstall. i just renamed all the exe files, hoping they won't run and give me a chance to restore. it didn't work

well you have given yourself more problems now all the installed properties of the files you have deleted will remain in the registry etc, also task scheduler settings (you don't see these in the user task scheduler that we can make adjustments in)

i think your best way to solve this is to re-install windows 7 sorry but that's my advice like i have posted before save all important stuff you want with linux and make a list of what programs you have had installed and use.

it's just a bunch of mcafee and a malwarebites exe files with an x at the beginning of the filename. that's nothing can;t quickly be changed back if need be.

I'm reading that libusb32 is not supposed to be on a 64bit machine because of this error and I may have inadvertently installed it. checking into it further

I think you are getting confused mate as far as I know LibUSB is for linux As for editing the registry I do not honestly believe that you will find what you are looking for!! we do not even know what the problem is.
Lastly deleting Windows files at Random Ie. your security programs is at best stupid if you do not know what you are doing.

Edit just for what its worth I agree with Brianzion about saving what you can and doing a new install. We have been at this for a long time now and despite several great ideas and a lot of work on your part we have achieved the sum total of not a lot. TBVH I think the time that is being taken up on this is just not worth it.

Ok been away from this thread for a while and I have to agree with Brianzion and others that have suggested a complete reinstall of windows.

My thoughts were with the power supply as suggested, but because all is ok in Linux, you can rule that out.
Run Ubuntu Live CD, save all important files to an external device, then do a reinstall, I really beieve this is the way forward.

A pain I know, but look at how much effort you have put in to no avail already.

not to worry we are here to help it wont do the machine any harm re-installing win 7 remember when you are up and running check to get all your updates from windows (sp1 etc).

Yea I'm going to reinstall. I'm in the process of migrating files. For the record LIBUSB32 definitely caused the problem. When installing the version I had you have to run it in Windows XP compatibility mode otherwise usb ports will not work on the next boot up. It's a well documented and seemingly common issue as the LIBUSB application is not very compatible with Win 7.

Libusb is used to divert drivers so certain programs can have certain access to usb devices. Why standard usb protocols are not enough? I do not know, but I ended up installing these diverted drivers in attempt to rescue a bricked iPhone for someone. I did my best to delete all libusb files and registry entries but I think I deleted a wrong reg entry somewhere and now Windows won't boot at all or repair itself, so a reinstall is the best thing to do. I don't mind so much because at least the problem was discovered. At least it wasn't malicious.

Thanks again for all the help and advice you all offered, and remember llibusb the next time someone gets screwed over by it.

keep the forum updated and let us now how it all goes it wont be long before you are up and running and i hope it solves the usb problem, i guess windows will install all the updates and SP1auto for you. when the desktop and system is running just go to update.(i would get the SP1 on and any other updates before installing your own programs )
