Solved How do i put computer to sleep via network?

hi guys,

currently this is my setup:-

1 ROUTER, connected to two computers with windows 7. One of these is a media centre and the other is an office pc. The media centre is sharing several of it's folders with the office pc, allowing me to transfer any files to the media pc.

Now i have managed to setup the office pc to wake up (WOL) the media centre and this works perfectly. But is there a utility that can send a command to the media pc to go back to sleep, once i've finished copying files to it?

I would prefer to have ONE utility that can do both SUSPEND & WAKEUP if possible.

Does the standard sleep options under windows 7 power management not suit, or not work? It would just go back to sleep after a few minutes of inactivity.

You can achieve this with Windows shutdown command, which can be executed against remote machines. There are a couple of tricks to making that work, but once you set it up, it works fine.

I had shutdown commands on my kids PCs but they knew how to override it, so I set up my server to remotely shut them down at predefined times. But I could have just as easily hibernate them rather than shut down.

Another way to do this, if the PC won't sleep automatically, is to execute this command from the media center PC..

rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState 0,1,0

The trick is how to initiate it when the office PC has finished.

So, how do you control your file copying? is it done by a schedule? Is it random and dependent on some other criteria?

@ tanyac - I'm using XBMC as a shell, so therefore explorer does not start, hence i don't think power options will work.

@ codekiddy - thanks for that link, but I want to manually be able to press a button (like a remote-control). Rather than enabling a whole load options, is there no simple utility that can do this? I mean my android phone has a program called "Unified Remote" and that can send WOL, Hibernate and Shutdown commands, surely there must be a windows software that does the same thing?

Also guys i send a suspend command, so that i can wake up the pc if need be.

well you can use teamviewer if you want more delux interface
it supports VPN, remote control, file transfer ...
and most important it's free and good!

remote desktop connection is the name of windows tool

Thanks very much codekiddy...i think teamviewer should be perfect, so long as it doesn't drain the connection or slow it down.

Well you don't have to have teamviewer connected to remote machine all the time.
connect when want to do something like put comp to sleep
thus, saving your bandwidth
