How to uninstall Windows XP from dual-boot with Windows 7?

I have a dual-boot system with Windows 8 (which is 99% similar to Win7) and WIndows XP.
Now, I need to uninstall Windows XP so that I can install Ubuntu.

But the problem is the partition having XP is active and it is the system drive.
I think even the MDR is located in XP partition.

Please help me to uninstall XP.

In order to move the boot files to Win8 so it boots itself you'll first need to convert C to a Primary partition: How to set partition as Primary or Logical with Partition Wizard

Then install EasyBCD (click Download - no Name or Email required) to follow these steps to Move Bootmgr to C:\ with EasyBCD - Windows 7 Forums .

Once Win8 partition has the System Active flags you can mark XP partition Inactive to delete it in Disk Mgmt: Partition - Mark as Inactive - Windows 7 Forums.

To avoid having your Linux install interfere, use this method to set up its boot manager: Dual boot Ubuntu-Win7

After moving bootmgr using BCDEasy, do I need to restart and then mark XP as inactive?

How do I mark Windows 7 (8) as active?

I believe EasyBCD will mark C Active for you which is why Wolfgang did not include it in tutorial. If not the various ways to do this are in Mark Partition Active.

I've not used Easy to do this with Windows 8 although it does support Windows 8. If there are any problems, confirm that C is Partition Marked Active then run Windows 8 Automatic Repair.

Hi there

Easy

Boot windows install disk - choose repair system (it won't find one -- doesn't matter) - get into command mode (tools/utilities ==>command mode)

type the following in

cd /bootrec

fixmbr
fixboot

Now all trace of Win XP boot is GONE. Now you can install Windows without any problem.

Now, thanks to GregRocker, I have changed the active system partition.

(jimbo45, sorry to disappoint you, it was not what I asked. Thanks anyway.)

Now I've formatted the partition having XP, but in boot menu, I see XP listed.
How do I remove it from list?

Did you delete the XP partition first, before formatting it?

Type msconfig in Search box, on its Boot tab delete the XP listing.

If not there delete it from the EasyBCD Edit OS Menu tab.
