Solved IE9 32bit opens empty new tabs

Morning folks, got another bug.

If I am using IE9 32bit version (default when you click on a link in a email or desktop shortcut) web pages open up fine. Clicking on new links, so long as they open in the same tab, open fine. When a link opens up in a new tab, or if I right click on link and choose 'open in new tab', the second, third, or how ever many tabs I open, the new tab window will be blank.

If I am using the 64bit version, all is fine... every single tab, every single time, will display the new tab just fine.

If I right click a link in the same email and copy...go to IE9 64bit...paste....it opens just fine.

We have the 64bit version pinned to the taskbar, but sometimes we (wife and I) forget when clicking on desktop web shortcuts and then surfing along, then a new tab wants to open and find we were using the 32bit and will not display new tab. Bummer.

I have not found out how to have the 64 bit open by default.

Thanks,
Gayle

OK, I have tried that idea, and still to no avail, will IE 32bit display the new tab. The tab or tabs will show up, but the whole tab page is blank.

IE9 64 bit still works, just doesn't go to the new tab, I think there is a setting to go to new tab, just have to find it.

Do I have to enable java add-on or will it automatically do it when a page wants to load the java add-on? My wife's online classes web pages are java based.

Some history... End of last month (November) I built a new system, ASrock fatal1ty pro mobo, i7 2700k chip, 16gb of GSkills memory, intel ssd drive, 2TB WD Black hdd, boxed version of Win7/64. All went well, no driver problem, no errors, just plain raw speed.

Except for this problem with IE. It's not major, just have to know how to work around it. Which took us a few hours to figure what was going on. That is why we have IE9 64 pinned to taskbar.

Willing to try anything, except re install Win7. Have already tried re installing IE9 twice. Don't really feel like a new browser...chrome...firefox.

Is there a 64bit IE8?

What happens if you open IE from the run box (win+r) with the command line iexplore -extoff, and then see what happens with new tabs? If it is only affecting the 32bit IE, then it is a BHO or an add-in control, but as to which that might take some digging. Running -extoff will at least tell me which type it is.

Thanks for the continued help.

I take it that there is a space between the hyphen and iexplore. I try that, and it brings up a web page running 32bit and a dialog box saying add on are disabled. I browse to yahoo and then right click on a link and choose, open in new tab.

Darn tab opens up blank.

I followed the above instructions and unchecked Enable third party extensions and restarted IE. IE9 32 bit still refuses to display anything in a newly opened tab.

I see whenever you change a setting for Internet Options, it changes both 32 and 64bit settings. 64bit keeps on opening new tabs correctly.

I did re-enabled the third party extensions.

Thanks,
Gayle

Update... If you were to right click on a link using IE9 32bit, and choose Open In New Window, It does not even open a new window.

IE9 64bit does.

Thanks Gayle

Does it simply do nothing when you right click like that? I have actually seen that before...

That is correct. Right clicking on a link and choosing... Open in new Window... does nothing. No hour glass or error. Kinda weird not seeing anything happening.

Have you tried opening iE9 "without add-ons" and going to the settings "cog" then onto the "general tab" choosing "Tabs" then "Settings" on the RH side... then clicking "Restore defaults" in the Tabbed Browsing Settings screen that will open?

The thinking is that when other defaults are restored in iE9 under the advanced tab it does not affect browsing tab behaviour - whereas my suggestion will.

After a "Restore defaults" operation close the browser.

Restart it the same way, set your tab preferences up afresh. It might now behave itself.

That's a very good suggestion - don't fix the problem, just use another product? ;) If only I could do that with other things in life. Alas, a new year's resolution for another year then :).

Seriously though, I have seen this with IE8 as well, and it comes down to Norton/Symantec products registering themselves incorrectly, which the post in the articles linked above does fix (as it re-registers the correct IE binaries as handlers for new windows and tabs).

I am really gald you guys stuck around and saw this thru.

The above link to ie8-rereg-32on64.cmd and 64on64.cmd took care of the the IE32bit new tabs not displaying.

All is good on the home front.:D

On a side note, this repair seems to be needed if a person had a Norton software installation. I am the only one that installed software, and only installed MSE and MSS for virus and malware protection. Well that and Defender.

Like I said, this showed up right after the IE9 upgrade. I believe IE8 work fine. Upgraded the same day to IE9.

Thanks Guys,
Another green check
