Internet Explorer 9 Beta (64-bit) Spell Checker

Maybe because they don't want to have to do one for every language pack they offer? English may be the preferred language for a lot of people but its not the only one available to windows users.

This is exactly the question I have. Why after 9 iterations of Internet Explorer are we still relying on 3rd party apps to check spelling?

I don't think it is a priority for MS. Plus, not everyone uses US English. At least with Chrome the download mirror usually knows where I am & downloads a British English version. Even SeaMonkey has a British version now (saves me copy & pasting a British English dictionary file into SM's dictionary folder or downloading a new one) & Mozilla has support for many dictionaries.

This makes absolutely no sense at all to me. This should have been a standard a long time ago. I'm using IE9 right now and I like it a lot. If they don't infuse a spell check, I'll go back to Google Chrome in protest. Are the developers having discussions about this at all?

The 64 bit IE 8 is quite good in my opinion, it would be better with a spellchecker though! ;)

You're right It doesn't make sense for the most used browser in the world not to have an internal spellchecker.

It's high time MS pulled their finger out about this. If MS can release something as good as Microsoft Security Essentials they can surely develop an internal inline spellchecker for a multiplicity of languages.

Minefield (Firefox x64) has a built in spell checker, but I keep getting this error every time I load Minefield:

Minefield said:
What happened: TypeError: Components.classes[‘@mozilla.org/extensions/manager;1’] is undefined

Minefield seems to randomly crash for no apparent reason. I haven't found the cause yet. I'd use Minefield for the spell checker, but it wants to crash, and I want to use a 64-bit browser now that Adobe supports 64-bit.
Hi, HOT97ECLIPSEGSX, I don't have an answer for IE9 Spell-check as I don't use it.

I do, however, use Minefield (FF) x64 4.0b8pre. The start up issue you are having is due to an incompatible extension or plug-in being loaded. Open Minefield and go to "Add-ons" by selecting it from the drop down menu or typing "Ctrl+Shift+A":

118970d1291098344-64-bit-browsers-screenshot00161.jpg

Disable them one by one until the error message is no longer present at the start up of Minefield.

Once you find the offending add-on, look for an update or a version specifically designed to work with the x64 build of Minefield or leave it disabled.

I think they're too busy trying to make IE 9 the fastest browser in history LOL! ;)

I hope the entire team isn't working on browser speed. That must be some meager budget Balmer has them on if it is. lol.

I mean in all seriousness, when all is said and done, why even build a browser just to end up a Section 8 level utility? I mean I know a guy who has a book shelf full of books and hasn't read a single one and he got them just to make people think he's intelligent. Is this what IE has become? A fast browser to brag about so people will think more of it?

What does it matter if speed is all your competition is up against? Once they best you on speed, and they will, you've wasted a lot of time and money on a simple version number. C'mon Son. Why no built in spell check?

This is a bit of a worry, I mean, speed is all people seem to compare a browser with these days.

Check out Speckie for an addon that adds inline spell checking. works with 32 and 64 bit versions of IE.

Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Speckie works great for me and functions exactly like the chrome / ff spell checkers... finally Speckie - spell check for IE

I'm running win7x64 with IE9rc ...

Ive used IE7Pro and there are numerous problems with it.. development ceased on it about 2 years ago and the spell check is with a search box, not inline, so it's very awkward.. forget IE7Pro...

Speckie doesnt appear to work too well. It works on their site, but not in several message boards I use, like this one. Out of the few options that are out there, none work well. IE7 isnt automatic on many sites either and I guess the devs of IE7 stopped doing anything with their Add On almost two years ago.

It's annoying that a feature that seems like it would be so simply to incorporate, MS decided to do nothing. I really, really wanted to use IE9 as my main browser, but not having spell check is a big negative for me. Not because im illiterate but its so easy to misspell when you are just typing away.....that and when youve been out of school for many years now lol

Speckie didn't work for me either. I'm using ieSpell at the moment. ieSpell works with the 32 bit version of IE 9, just not the 64 bit version. Microsoft seems to want to force you to use the 32 bit version anyway so thats what I end up running most of the time.

Oh, Speckie works just fine for me, on this board too.

I had been using ieSpell for years, but had to switch to Speckie when I got Win 7 Pro x64 on my new laptop. So far, I am very pleased with Speckie.

I'm using Speckie on IE9 x64 and x32 release version since day one and it pretty much works perfect, so I don't get whats going on with you other guys... maybe a conflict amongst other add ons, IE7 pro will definitely jack IE9 all up... dunno....... also the dev will answer an email same or next day and fixes stuff right away.... he seems motivated to get it right...

the reality is if you want FF or Chrome like spell check in IE, Speckie is the only game in town...

Speckie installs into %appdata% instead of %programfiles%. Possibly, some people have trouble executing "data" out of %appdata% due to anti-virus restrictions.

could be.... I had problems with win7 file and download security using avg and avast... I went to MS Security essentials and never had a problem again... everything works perfect... no problems whatsoever...

so I'll say this... with a plain vanilla MS installation: win7 + IE9 + MS office + security essentials + full updates + speckie... I never have problems ever..... if you are someone who jacks with 50 different add ons and security apps... removes them... uses multiple or not up to snuff antiv... you cant really expect a stable system if you dirty it all up like crazy like that....

I see no new info on this in the last 10 months or so -

I've found IEspell works in both IE9 and 64-bit Windows, but it corrupts your text form. So, I'm still waiting for someone to develop a new IEspell. Funny, Safari has a great Spelling and Grammer module Built in, and Microsoft is too chintz to do the same! O, so, Speckie you say? Thanx for the link.
