IPConfig

I'm sort of a novice. On a website it told how to find your mac address and other info. It said to go to start>cmd>ipconfig -all. I made a mistake and typed ipconfig -all in the run box instead of in the comand prompt. When I did a black screen appeard then immediately went away. I did it in the comand prompt then it worked and stayed.

Anyway, I then decided to type just ipconfig in the run box to see what happened and I got the black window that immediately went away. I was supposed to get the ipconfig window that has all the information on it as I have in the past but instead I just got the fleeting black window. I tried rebooting but no success.

What do I do to get the ipconfig window back with all the tabs and everything? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

ipconfig /help

for help with the switches that can be used with ipconfig

But all of that is too complicated for me. I will need the info in the ipconfig window to understand or do anything.

Your not going to like this, but I just remembered it was msconfig that I used in the past and will need in the future.

Does ipconfig even come up as a window other than the comand prompt? That's how much of a novice I am. Also, if it's not too much to ask, what is ipconfig mostly used for?

I was expecting a lecture about not being knowledgable enough to be on these forums. Thanks for all of your help and I will check out those tutorials.

ipconfig is a DOS based command that you can run which provides you with the information about your network setup. As such, it's expecting that you would first open a command prompt and then run the command.

By just typing in ipconfig at the run box, it opens a dos prompt, runs the command and then immediately exits out of the dos prompt. Thus, your flashing window.

Instead, you need to go to run and type in cmd...and then get a command prompt which stays running. Then, issue your commands inside of it...like ipconfig /all.
