Hi there,
First what a fantastic site. I have already gained so much from reading other peoples posts. Unfortuately I have not found an answer to my problem.

I try to install PS3server and it asks for java runtime to be installed. It then tries to install Java and I get the following error;

'This installation package could not be opened. Verify the package exists and that you can access it or contact the application vendor to that this is a valid windows installer package'.

I have been to the Java website and downloded various versions of Java and each time I try to install I get the same error. I have tried to install from the website and I have downloaded to my computer and installed from it. Always the same error.

Any suggestions please?

Regards
Brendan

Hi Aldjinn
I have tried everything you have suggested and I keep getting the same error.
Getting rather frustrated with this.
A quick search says I'm not the only one with this problem...
What should I do about the following error message? This installation package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package.

I have turned off my antivirus as suggested, I have tried offline installation and all to no avail.

This is a brand new computer and a new installation of windows 7 ultimate.
Suggestions anyone?

I always get my JREs and JDKs from the developer (vs. consumer) side of Sun:

Developer Resources for Java Technology

...so start here:

Java SE Downloads - Sun Developer Network (SDN)

And click the "Download" button for "JRE 6 Update 17".

On the next page:

  • Select either "Windows" or "Windows x64" (as appropriate) in the "Platform" drop-down
  • Check the "I agree..." check box
  • Leave everything else blank
  • Click the "Continue" button

On the next page:

  • Do NOT click the orange download button.
  • Instead, click on the name of the EXE - "jre-6u17-windows-x64.exe"

Sorry for late reply, I gave up in frustration but now want to solve the problem.
No matter what I do, including downloading the file onto another computer and then transferring the file via memory stick, i still get the same error I mention in my second post.
Any ideas please?

Let's see if this will work:

  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u17 allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u17-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Thanks for the prompt reply Jacee
I tried this and no luck, still the same error.
One thing though, when I went to uninstall older versions of Java, none were listed.
Does this mean anything?

It just means that you don't have any older Java versions installed.

Yay, got it installed.
I had to install another user profile and then it installed easily. Probably due to my original user profile having an apostrophe in the name due to a typo.
See my thread here http://www.sevenforums.com/installation-setup/50477-wish-rename-user-profile.html

Anyway, a big thanks to all of you who tried to help me. This is a great forum with great people and i just know that i will calling out for help again in the near future.
Thanks all.
