Just a simple Word formatting question?

After starting a list with numbers (1., 2., etc.), how can one align the second line of text (and third, fourth...) with the first line of text in a paragraph in 2007 Word? Not align with the number, but align with the first letter of the first line. In 2003 Word one could simply grag the "format tabs" at the top and slide them over. Not here. Such a simple task, but so much time to learn. :( Thank you anyone for helping.

Did you use the tab key?

Actually, I just tried it, and what you want is the default behaviour. I started the numbered list and began typing by the number (1.). When I reached the end of the line, the next line started directly under the first letter of the paragraph, not under the number 1. I would delete what you have and restart the list...you probably have some formatting that is conflicting.

Thanks MacGyvr. I will try it. Seems a little restrictive though (i.e., what if I want to vary the spacing between the number and the first letter of the first word, or have the second line of text align with the number). I will experiement with what you wrote. Thank you again.

Try to enable the ruler and adjust the pin(dunno the correct word for it). This will enable spacing for separate lines.

You may first complete your typing. Then go to second line Hit backspace and delete the bullets. Then try Tab or Spacebar to move the line to where you want.

tried myself now. I do not have 2007, so tried in 2010. This version has another category of bullets and numbering called multilevel list. This serves ur purpose. Not sure have seen this in 2007. So, follow the steps below.
Leave the first line with numbering.
Second line, numbering auto generates. Next to the number, type 2. then the text. Press enter.
Now follow the same above step for 3rd line too. Once done, bring ur cursor before 3 and hit backspace.
Follow the same in 2nd line too. This was, the 2nd numbering starts with the 1st lines text.

Hope I am clear.

Start your numbered list and type the first line of the text, the stuff that comes straight after the number. Then hit Shift+Return to get a new line, which will automatically be aligned with the beginning of the text above it. When you want a new number, just hit Return without the shift.
