Hi

I just bought a USB drive (i.e. "memory stick") from Kingston. It works fine on my Windows XP computer, but on my Windows 7 Pro (x64) computer it is failing to work.

It is showing up under Control Panel > System > Device Manager, where it appears under "other devices" with the name of "DT Rubber 3.0", but it has a little "!" in a yellow triangle. And when I right click on it and select Properties, the Device Status is "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)" however it cant find a driver either on my PC nor when it searches online.

Worse on the Kingston website, it says that there aren't any drivers for this device.

- Any suggestions?

I have several different model of Kingston USB thumb drives. I haven't had any problems using them in Windows 7 or Windows 8. Non of mine are USB 3 though, is the one your having problems with a USB 3 device? Even if it is it should be backwards compatible with USB 2.0. Have a look at this. Code 28: The drivers for this device are not installed

Thanks for trying to help.

However that "Code 28" was utterly useless. It told us nothing that was not obvious and that did not help. I even tried the Mr Fixit utility from Microsoft but having also tried but failed to download a driver, that failed to help too. :^(

Yes it is a USB 3.0 drive and like I say it works just fine on my Windows XP computer, but it fails on my Win7 x64 PC.

Interestingly a chap from Kingston just phoned me trying to help. Unfortunately he couldnt tell me the name of the correct driver and so although we tried getting windows to search my hard drive, we got nowhere.

What I do have is a new Windows 8 laptop (running Windows 8 x64 Pro) and I had a look to see what drivers it is using. Bizarrely it is using drivers that appear to be from 2006! There are three of them on this Win8 device:
WpdFs.dll
WpdUpFHr.sys
WUDFRd.sys
But my Windows 7 dialogue was looking for an .INF file and even though I found files with the same name on my Win 7 computer, it didn't like being pointed directly to .DLL nor .SYS files.

Any further thoughts?

I just plugged in my USB 3 external drive enclosure, it lists C:\Windows\system32\drivers\USBSTOR.SYS for the driver. If you are trying to install or update drivers manually like that it looks for an inf file. The inf file basically tells windows what files to use and where to put them. SYS files are meant to run from an actual driver installer utility.

Drat so do we have any conceivable way of knowing what the correct .INF file is called?
(The man from Kingston didn't - although I'm not sure how hard he was trying... !)

Usually when your searching for an inf file in this manner its part a driver package that doesn't have its own installer. It's in a folder with the other required files. Its something you have downloaded. If Windows can't find a driver in the usual locations this is how you get around that. If Windows can't find the correct driver that usually means it doesn't have it or it doesn't know what the device is its trying to find the driver for. That or the actual file it needs is missing or corrupt. Poke around the Kinston site some more and see if there is a driver for that device for another version of Windows, vista maybe, you might get lucky and find one that works. Another option is to look for a USB 3 driver for your motherboard. If there is one try installing that over the default Windows driver.

Wait, my motherboard: "Intel DP55WB (MA TX)" but to get clear, I do not think that it has any USB 3.0 ports. So should I be looking for a standard driver for USB 2.0 or what?

Well I just tried running the Intel Update Driver Utility
(Intel® Driver Update Utility)
however it failed to find anything that needs updating. Should I believe it though?

EDIT01 - Okay I cant find any drivers that look relevant to my motherboard on the Intel site. :^/

If it doesn't have any USB 3 ports looking for a USB driver likely won't help. I doubt you'll find any USB 2.0 drivers, they are part of the Windows install.

The Intel Driver Update Utility likely only looks for driver updates for Intel devices. If you USB controller is not an Intel device the utility will just ignore it.

One option is to go into device manager and delete/uninstall all the USB devices listed under Universal Serial Bus Controllers. Then reboot and Windows will reinstall them all again. At least it should. If you are using a USB keyboard and mouse they will become unusable when you do this. To shut down you may have to momentarily press your power button. Don't hold it down just tap it once momentarily.

Any more suggestions?

This BL**DY ridiculous. I thought memory sticks were supposed to be easy to use!
But I have now wasted over 2 hours just trying to get a memory stick working - which works absolutely fine on my other two PCs - to work on my Win7 PC.

Gads!
