"known compatibility issues"

Question: When Win7 says "This program has known compatibility issues", is it basing it on an analysis of what the program is doing, or is it consulting a list of programs?

So far, I have encountered this with DaemonTools (even though their site claims it's Win7 compatible), ZoneAlarm, and Adobe Reader (version 7 - I don't know why that's the latest one I can download fresh from their site, because I know version 9 is out). I've gone ahead and used Adobe Reader because I needed it and it seemed to work okay, but I didn't want to chance it with something like ZoneAlarm that is going to attach itself deep into the OS.

Any advice?

It's list based and I'd be more inclined to trust the software developer as the list as it's probably out-of-date.

Although, if you're looking for a replacement for daemon tools, slysofts virtual clonedrive is a good option.

Also, last time I checked, Alcohol 120% worked with Build 7022 of Se7en.

Are you using Daemon Tools Lite?

Also, since Checkpoint Labs (ZoneAlarm) won't even reply to a query about their compatibility, any recommendations for other security suites? (including Anti-spam)?

I run Symantec Talkworks 3.0 which is very old. Windows tells me the program isn't compatible, but it runs fine.

Dunno about ZoneAlarm, but if you just need a pdf reader, you might try this - it's much smaller and faster than Adobe.

I would get rid of Adobe Reader anyhow, it is always getting exploited and they take forever to come out with security patches to address the issue. There are a bunch of free alternatives for PDF viewing and editing.

Do not install Zone Alarm by any means. It will wreck your system, or at least it did to me on build 7000 and 7022. Ok, wreck is drastic, but you will have to be a skilled user to fix it even after uninstalling.

Unless anything has changed, stay away from this app for now. Btw, I really like this app and can't wait for it to become compatible myself. Their common answer though is to blame it on MS because they make too many changes to the Beta and RC as they are developing for ZoneLabs to have a working beta. I think they just don't like to get involved until 7 is RTM.

Anyone know if SpamPal is compatible? I used to use that until I got some other packages with anti-spam components. But I just checked their website, and it doesn't even claim to be compatible with Vista.

An Anti-Spam filter is almost more important to me than an anti-virus.
