Laptop only loads Startup Repair

Hi,

I'm new to startup repair and not sure of what it is actually doing but when i start my laptop i get a choice of start windows normally or startup and repair. If i click start windows normally it loads as normal but then i get black screen and the mouse nothing else. When i choose startup repair its attempting repairs and not getting any further. can anyone help me on what to do next i have alot of personal stuff on the laptop and dont want to loose anything.
