Losing Disk space AFTER Defrag

I recently bought a 1TB drive. And swiftly filled it up to 870GB. So I went and deleted 20GB of stuff and decided to defrag it for the first time.

I used Defraggler and I noticed that as I was defragging the drive it was listing my disk space as having less and less space... by the time the defrag finished I only had TWENTY-EIGHT GB LEFT!?

Has anyone ever heard of this or know what might cause this? I was thinking i'd end up with MORE disks pace not 123GB LESS!

thanks...

Maybe I can be of help. In my opinion its because of shadow copies

Its probably because of shadow copies.

They can be removed by using disc clean-up on c drive properties and cleaning system files.

I forgot to mention that the drive in question (thats filling up) is my E: drive... my secondary drive.

However, Rich, thank you for the advice... I ran disk cleanup and it gave me 40 more GB of space back... I wonder if its possible that WHILE I was defragmenting my drive Windows was also creating an extremely large system restore point on my secondary hard drive. (I do have my computer set to put it on my secondary harddrive however I looked at the date on all the files there today and they all said they were created 5 days ago... I had 120 GB free space yesterday...

What is also weird is that it only gave me 40 GB back... HOWEVER. My C: Drive is about 130 GB FULL. So it might make sense that an entire copy of my drive since the amount lost is the same amount of space.

Does any of that make sense?

I'm still confused cause i'm still missing 80GB... maybe it is a massive restore but thank you for the help!

Tell you what, chkdsk is not the best tool to use if you are concerned about a bad drive.

What brand is it? Each manufacturer has their own diagnostic tools, just go online to find them. If you can't find them, give us a shout, and we'll get them for you.

I downloaded the one from WD and it wouldn`t run saying something about Cable Error. Whatever that means... I read that false positives were common with WD diagnostic tools
