Solved MBR error on reinstalling Win7 to clean HD

I just noticed those Boot Order details are your screenshots Gary. Are your the same Beanster? Nothing can be confirmed until we know this.

Ill need to look at these closer on monitor but it appears boot order is solely determinative for UEFI or Legacy.

I now see the boot override choices you referred to earlier but which were cut out of screenshot. You said you adjusted these. Gary go you see how they affect the Order choices? What settings are offered?

Yesterday, when I got the install to work, I had chosen EFI Compatible and used the stick without the UEFI label on it in Priority Boot, which no longer appears today. Maybe if I changed it back to Legacy it would show. I'll try it. This is the initial screen on entering BIOS.

Thanks again for going through all of those BIOS entries. It will help Greg and Britton30 understand the minutiae of your system and communicate troubleshooting more precisely. Everyone has the same set of screenshots to reference.

You have two very knowledgeable members on your thread, if there's anything that needs to be straightened out. Take your time and continue to comply with information / screen shots and things will go faster.

I've got another problem. I cannot log in to Windows. It will not accept my password. Had trouble with it last night, too. Took 9 attempts. Today, no go at all, and of course I do not have a Password Recovery Disk. Is there any problem if I follow these instructions?


Recover Windows 7 Forgotten Password with Windows Installation CD

Preparation: a Windows installation CD or DVD. Or any Windows 7, Vista or XP CD or DVD.
Step 1: Boot from Installation CD
As soon as you turn on PC, press DEL or F2 to enter BIOS setting screen. Move CD-ROM option to the first place of boot disk. Save and restart your PC, it will boot from CD instantly.
Step 2: Select Repair Windows and Get into Command Prompt
When your computer boots from the CD, you should click repair your computer option, then choose Command Prompt from various options.
Step 3: Recover Windows 7 Password with Commands
3-1 Type: copy c:\windows\system32\sethc.exe c:\
3-2 Type: copy /y c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe c:\windows\system32\sethc.exe
3-3 Exit installation CD, and reboot your PC.
Step 4: Reset Windows 7 Password
While Windows login screen appears, press the Shift key 5 times to bring up the command line interface. Now type net user your name your new password.
For example, net user isunshare 12345. That means that password of account isunshare is set as 12345.
Password Reset work has finished so far. But sethc.exe has been covered. Now use the command c:\sethc.exe file back to c:\windows\system32\sethc.exe to restore the original sethc.exe file.

Still need the Boot Override choices. You said you had chosen one to get install to start but in spite of asking I still never saw them until Gary posted his. I've also asked Gary how they apply.

How does it differ from the Boot Order listings?


In post 63 what did you Select to get Boot>Boot menus shown in post 75?

Thanks for the Boot\ Boot > screen

I wonder what the F12 Print screen does - try using that for your next screen capture
Press the F12 key (copy to clipboard probably)
Launch Paint
Press Ctrl+V to paste the clipboard onto the palette
Press Ctrl+S to save it
Once the image is saved, then you can use that in you posts.

edit: I don't know how to get the image out of the UEFI BIOS - you're not in Windows yet, so the above (paint) is utter rubbish. Sorry about that.​

I hope that works, it will be easier for you and clearer for SF members.

If it doesn't do what I think it does, don't sweat it, keep using the camera. Fuzzy images are better than no images.

Greg is the best on all of this stuff. Follow his instructions closely and provide feedback when asked. Your system will be in great shape afterwards.

Here is my F8 menu. And, I got to the Boot\Boot screen by clicking on (under Boot Option Priorities)
>CD/DVD ROM Drive BBS Priorities.

I see that I did not capture the priorities under the second option for hard drives, so I'll do that next and send.
