One last confirmation on Prime95 - as long as the temps remain fine during the first 15-20 min, the entire test shouldn't do any harm, right? What would be fine temps, just for comparison? I got an i7 920 mounted on a P6T SE SE mobo. I can fetch the rest of the details tomorrow, if it will help give me a better sense on temps.

Yes. If the temps stay in the safe range for the first 15-20 minutes then the rest of the tests should be ok. I'd say if it starts to go over 80 then stop the test

Yes. You are correct. Just let it run overnight if you can.

I ran the SeaTools Short Generic and Long Generic tests on the relevant HD. Both passed.
All I'm left with is Prime95, but I'm developing a feeling that it, too, will pass.

No. They don't need to be run close together. Just run them when you can. And running for more then 3-4 hours is fine. I say 3-4 hours because that is usually how long it takes to produce any type of errors if there were going to be any.

I started up Prime95 and in a matter of less than 3 minutes my cores went to 70 and then one hit 82.

Just let the tests keep running. If it goes any higher then 85 stop the test again.

Ran again, 2 cores hit 85, one went to 88, another to 86 and the last two to 84.
I don't think this is gonna work.

Ok. Then you need to figure out why they are getting so hot. Make sure your CPU fan is seated properly on the CPU. You could also re-apply some artic silver thermal paste.

In the interim, try opening your case and pointing a house fan inside and see if it keeps your temps down.

Ok. This might very well be the problem that is causing your crashes. Let me know what happens. Try the house fan first. That is the easiest.

What are your CPU core temps at idle?

Your Tcase max temp is 67.9°C, add 5°C for max core temps 72.9°C.

Your CPU will throttle down before it gets hot enough to do damage.

Have you cleaned the dust out of the case?
All fans working?
Check if the CPU cooler is loose.

I've got one case fan offline since it took a little hair-beating and cost a ton to replace.
Far as I know, the interior is all fine.

I will go to the local shop and see what they have to do.

You are correct.

A high temp when at idle indicates a problem, which, depending on the cause, can stay the same or get worse at higher CPU frequency/voltages.

According to CoreTemp, at this precise instant, the "idle" temps are 40 for the first core and varying between 35-39 for the other 3.

Did you clean the fan blades?
They get a dust buildup that will decrease their efficiency.

Which case fan is not working?
Good quality case fans are normally not very expensive, check for another brand if the stock fan is pricey.
If you have only two case fans, one pulling air in and the other pushing air out, loosing one will definitely cause a heat problem in your case.
Be sure all wires are tucked out of the way as this can impede the air flow and cause heat issues.

Assuming you have the stock Intel CPU cooler, idle temps of 35-39°C are not unusual, replacing the case fan should lower that a couple of degrees.

The Prime95 temps are too high, should be below 70°C with a stock CPU cooler.
Check if the CPU cooler is loose, this is the #1 cause, it should be firmly in place.
Try pushing the pins in, this can take quite a bit of force in most cases.
The next step may be to clean and replace the thermal paste.

The fan blades have been cleaned last time I dusted the insides. The CPU fan with better care than the case fans.

I have 3 fans in my case. The case is ThermalTake and has a pair of proprietary fans. I've got a stock fan on the back and a new proprietary fan on the side. The one on top has not been replaced.

As for checking if everything on my CPU is placed properly and that: I don't trust myself enough to do anything to a CPU but cleanly replace it. I'll be taking it to a shop tomorrow and see what they have to say.
