Moving Folders

Hi,

I have two drives, C and D. C is for W7/booting, D is for all my data.

I had a folder on D drive called 'My Music', I went into the folder 'Music' under my username on C drive and moved it to D drive. However, on C drive, I still see Music, however if I click on it, I get an error message 'Access is denied'. Usually, if you move a folder, it disappears from the C drive, but in this instance, something went wrong. Any idea how to fix it? I want the C drive Music folder to disappear.

EDIT: Just tried moving My Pictures and the same result, C drive folder remains but is inaccessible.

What method are you using to move these special user folders? They should never be moved except by the prescribed method ...


Copy the data in the moved folder to another location for safety


Right click a folder and and choose properties,
If this is a special use folder there will be a location tab that is used to "move" the folder

In your case it appears that you did not follow this procedure so Windows has re-created the folder

If you right click on the empty folder and Location Tab you should have the option to set the Location of the folder to the folder you moved,
follow the prompts and this will re-make the special links

if you wish to move any of the special folders follow this procedure and windows will work with you, Don't follow the procedure and Windows will keep trying to put things right

That's exactly how I tried moving it, has always worked in the past. My downloads folder moved just fine, which was the first folder I tried moving.

That's a strange one, been doing it that way for years myself without any Issue

I have seen occasions where a remnant folder was left behind that needed to be deleted manually

Always do a reboot before and after this sort of things, to clear the system.

Only thing I can suggest is check the properties of the two folders and see which one has the Location Tab - ensure that that one has the contents you want and manually delete the other,

You may need to reset the folder location tab to place the folder back where it started reboot and then start again.

There is a tutorial to fully reset things from Shawn Brink Here ... User Folders - Restore Default Location - Windows 7 Help Forums if all else fals you could try that and reboot and start again

I guess I just have a remnant folder issue. Most folders moved just fine, just two offenders.

Well I think the problem I have hasn't been solved by simply deleting the folders. I was playing around I think it was with 7zip and it sees two folders (on C drive and D drive) of the folders that didn't 'move' properly. So even though the C drive folder is deleted, it's not...
