Uncheck it all and click "clear now". You only clear it when it has problems. It will speed up your browsing if you have them unchecked.

You might just keep checked the browsing and download history, as that isn't so important. So you can keep only that one clear. I don't know exactly how firefox is set up so someone else might have to point you in the right direction. Try looking for a check box out of that window that says "Delete browsing history" or "clear files", something like that, and have it Unchecked.

You first said keep browsing and history checked, and at the end you say have it unchecked. but leave the cookies and cache unchecked and don't clean those until I notice a slowness of the computer, right? Is the cookies what remembers what websites I go to, I would have thought that would be browsing.

Hey patti.

I told you to check browsing and history because I couldn't find the box to keep it all from being cleared, but thanks to lehnerus's tutorial, I found where it is, so you no longer need do that. Really all of this is optional, it just might speed your internet up a little. And yes, don't clear the cache or cookies until something goes wrong with the internet, which shouldn't happen very often.

If you want to follow along in the tutorial for what I am going to describe, you can: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/94662-firefox-browser-auto-cleanup-how-set.html?ltr=F
Find the "Privacy" tab and make sure you see "Firefox will 'Use custom settings'". Uncheck "clear history when firefox closes" and you might consider unchecking "Remember download history" - if it remembers download history, you may get confused with all the download history that gets stored up.

Is the cookies what remembers what websites I go to, I would have thought that would be browsing.

It depends on the site.

The "cookies" may remember:

  • What you have done at sites.
  • What settings you have used.
The Yahoo cookie for the web mail remembers the page layout that you set (e.g. navigation and viewing pane widths).

"Browsing History" remembers the web pages you have visited.

Are you using the latest version of Firefox?
It is faster than the previous versions.

I am a little confused. If I follow the tutorial in its enitirety, it will delete cookies and history every tiime I close FF, isn't that what you said not to do? So what do I check and what don't I check. He was under tools>options, I was under tools>clear history, so which one do I do?

Ok, dustsailor, under the privacy menu everything is checked except the last one of clearing history. I don't understand it all, but I don't care. Now when I go to tools > clear history, I have all of them checked and I don't think I should have, right? So which ones should I have checked when I clean things up?

Select none of them (But you told me you have to select at least one). But I don't think those options matter, because you selected not to delete things when firefox closes. So you shouldn't have to even be bothered by going into that menu, so you might just let it be.

That way firefox will remember things so it doesn't have to constantly search for them, thus making it go a little faster.

No, only if you post a problem here on Sevenforums and someone recommends you do it in order to rule out faulty internet files. There is no real reason to do it except in troubleshooting problems.

Well that isn't the place you are supposed to be. it will automatically be like that, but it shouldn't matter because the box I had you uncheck prevents that from automatically clearing the data. It should be fine anyhow, you're all set Patti :)

That's unusual

That's unusual.
I just tried it on my FF and it remembered the options I unchecked.

Try running FF as "Administrator" (you shouldn't have to do this):

  • Right click on the FF and select "Run as administrator".
  • Make the changes that you want.
  • Exit FF.
  • Start FF normally and check the settings.

You should only have to select "Remember History" to completely disable "Auto-Cleanup".
Auto-Cleanup Off 01.png
You could also update to the latest version (it is supposed to be faster). :)
