IE 9 (32 bit) crashed. The 64 bit still works. Yes I tried the usual fixes: Reset, Delete Personal Settings, restart computer, take an Excedrin, turn modem off, etc. The OS is Windows Home Premium 64 bit.

I don’t see a place to uninstall IE 9 32 bit. Control Panel to Programs and Features, doesn’t list it.

Seems that IE 9 needs reloaded. Microsoft offers two downloads: Windows Internet Explorer 9 for IT Professionals and Developers Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 -- and also the same thing in 64-bit. It seems that I need the first one and not the 64 bit edition, is that correct?

Can I download it over top of the current IE 9?
Will I lose my “Favorites List” (bookmarks)?
Will there be any other issues?
Is there any other fix for this?

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
Actually it's Advil :)
Joking aside which security suite do you use sounds like the issue could be coming from it if the 64 bit doda works Norton possibly ?
Use Clean boot,
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/179159-troubleshoot-application-conflicts-performing-clean-startup.html
Click Start and type in the search box,
msconfig
Click on the suggestion on top or hit the Enter key,
Go to the Startup section and take some screen shots for a complete list,
Go to the Services section and on the bottom left Check the box to Hide All Microsoft services,
Repeat the screen shots,
See the links above my signature on how to take and upload screen shots here,
Cheers.

Yes, Norton runs in the background and does virus updates. Could be Norton since it was sudden. There are no special toolbars, ad-ons, and no changes were made before the crash.

This appears to be a Norton problem. The Norton update crashed the IE browsers.
See: https://community.norton.com/en/forums/tonights-update-crashing-ie11#comments

Norton sure caused lots of Excedrin and Advil to be needed.

I have a few related questions:
I managed to find the Favorites folder (bookmarks) and somehow managed to copy it to the 64 bit browser. It copied in alphabetical order, rather than the order it was in, but at least I didn’t lose my favorites.
Will using a restore point on System restore, put my Favorites list back in the order it was, or will it remain in alphabetical order?

When the Favorites list is “exported”, does the export process “copy” the bookmarks to the new file or location, - or does it “move” the bookmarks and thus leave the Favorites list empty?

Is the 64 bit IE useable for everything that the 32 bit does? What’s the difference?

Do programs like Deep Freeze or Roll Back Rx, resolve problems like this with IE or with malware, ransom ware, viruses?

I heard that some folks use Deep Freeze and they store bookmarks, copies of news articles, photos and other data on an external hard drive (which isn’t frozen). Thus their computer always runs fast, never bogs down, and is immune to viruses. I don’t know if they use Norton or maybe don’t need it.

Roll Back Rx can also quickly revert to an earlier time. I don’t know how it affects Norton updates or data like bookmarks. Maybe it erases them.

Hi,
Yea Norton is like that sometimes :)
Exported favorites are only exported like a copy at that moment so they are not removed,
They will be alphabetic.

usually all one would need to do to use the 64 bit version is to activate Enhanced protection mode
Internet options/ Advanced scroll down for the option,
There's no need to open the .exe in programs because it's open and managing all 32 bit windows or tabs.

Will anything be affected by using EPM :/ never know but you can always have a look out for the Active x filtering symbol in the url address bar next to the compatibility view symbol = broken page icon.
Active x filtering is a blue circle with a slash through it when activated,
Also referring to Gear symbol and Safety see if it's checked.

I don't know about all the other goodies you refer to,
Norton might throw a fit over stuff like that ?
Cheers.

Thank you ThrashZone for your help.

Before this event, when I filed an article in a Documents folder inside Libraries, then the folder that was most recently used would always move to the top. The second most recently folder would fall to second position. The third most recently folder would be in the third from the top position. That way all my most often used folders were always at the top when ever I went to save another article.

However now all the folders are alphabetical. The last folder used opens, but if want to select a different folder that is frequently used, it is no longer near the top. Instead I must scroll down through the list, - alphabetically.

I prefer having my most frequently used folders near the top. I often use the same four or five folders for storing articles.

How can I go back to having the most recently used folders near the top and not alphabetical?

Note that this alphabetical list appears only when I am filing an article. If I click on the Folders next to the Start Button, it opens Libraries, and then I click on Documents which opens with the Folders shown in the order they were last modified or used. That’s what I want to see when I am filing an article. It was always that way but something changed.

Hi
Sounds like Sort by date modified to me was how it was sorting ?
Inside the favorites menu only sort by name is an option I believe it's always been like that.

If you think about it favorites is just a folder or at lease if you create a folder outside the favorites default folders structure it is anyway,
But since ie not a file or folders manager there's really no options for other sorting I suppose it needs to be sorted before importing ?

Fwiw all my new entries added unless I save to an already existing folder is listed at the bottom :/
I'm not sure what the deal with that is ?
Your saying your newly added stuff is at the top :/

ie8-9 are very old browser versions why would you use them or need to use either of them ?
AVG isn't very good either Norton is better but has an occasional quirk/ issue with windows updates especially with internet explorers new security updates.
With older versions I would expect any security suite to throw a fit :)
Cheers.

Thanks everyone for your help. I'm going to mark this as "solved" since it was found that Norton caused the problem. Norton has now corrected their update and IE 32bit browser is working again.
