Let's get this ball rollin'..............

Hello Cruxone/Nick,

I've been having some problems here myself, someone apparently partially cut a coaxial cable I ran years ago for a my main cable modem and I was having a hard time figuring this out. I just wasn't expecting "foul-play" I guess! Then, I finally got on earlier today for a real short time, and my lappie died, completely! Lost all kinds of open stuff, then rebooted and it said there was a damaged boot record. So after a quick "tech-trick" or at least a workaround (powered-off-&-on) It works fine for now! I just had something seemingly wrong with my router, so I just pulled the whole thing and replaced it for now. Now I just have to take a chance with no ground throughout the building, until later, but enough about me!!

I didn't see you the other day and I assumed you couldn't find DVD's or something, then The next day I started having problems....(BTW: I'm fine for now, I think) Let's get you going!

I am glad you did end up getting the DVDs/answers all okay, and I guess it's late to be asking you, but what type of DVD's are they maybe DVD + RW? or (plus/minus) in place of the "+"??

  1. Check to be sure you still have about the same amount of drive space free for use on your C drive. You can check back to Posts #123, 126, etc. No need to post screen cap. just be sure the room hasn't been eaten-up by something. It was just over 8GB free the other day.
  2. Download the image file for your computer: http://msft.digitalrivercontent.net/win/X17-58997.iso Windows 7 Home Premium x64 English, Saving it to your E : drive in a location you will know where to find it. This is a large file and may take some time to download depending on your connection. Remember - later on, well be using YOUR original windows OEM product key to activate this copy of your windows licensed software properly. We will go over those details when the time comes.
  3. Use this tutorial to burn the ISO file to a blank DVD: How to Burn a bootable Windows 7 DVD(follow steps from the top all the way through the end of step 1. Then stop. Keeping in mind where the ISO/Image file was saved to on our E : Drive during Step 2)
You should now have a clean copy of the original windows installation disc for your licensed version. Congratulations!  Hold on to it tightly! :D

Now, if anything EVER goes wrong in the future (God Forbid  ), all you need is this disc (undamaged), an understanding of what you need to do (or a copy of the next set of instructions I'll be sending!) and to back up any files, drivers, etc you may wish to keep at the time (which you've done already, for this time! - so were past this step! - at least for the files that is....but that's coming....just wait.) Basically what I'm saying is: Always Hang-On To This Disc! You'll always be much more safe and prepared for similar problems with far less work involved.

Questions?...

In a little bit, I'll be sending you a link(s) to the general installation process, some of which of it may not apply to you, or have already been done. You can still benefit from reading through it and get an idea of the overall process. As well as a chance to make a copy/print-out, in case your have a question/problem once the process has begun, as this will be your only helper at that point. I will not be there, so print anything that you can which might apply, and be of use to you. The links will follow shortly, but there's no major rush as you have quite a bit to do I think.........

Thanks,
Mike

I fixed it! I bought a new sound card Channel+ MUL106 5.1 Channel PCI Sound Card and installed it.
Plugged speakers into new PCI plug connections. (same as were plugged into MOBO audio connections).
Microsoft still would let sound work, so I went to Channel+'s website and downloaded a driver (it wasn't on Microsoft's list of driver updates) and rebooted.
Sound!

Ok, I only have 4GB available in my C drive again. Not sure how that happened. My currently installed programs only total 2.54 GB, so uninstalling programs won't help. I tried to diable hybernate again, that didn't do anything.

Although a hardware issue has not been ruled out completely eiger3970, there would be a lot cheaper ways to test that out, using a hardware offline tool run from a downloaded DVD, and/or downloading a non-windows OS like Linux and seeing if the problem magically disappears, or persists (Cruxone Just wants to try to fix all the errors we have found with the windows installation. So it's a good idea, but it also won't apply to all computers. And we've been through d/l-ing the venders drivers, too but Congrats on your system!:)

Cruxone, I've usually found that the DVD-RWs are used for movies/music that is used for a DVD player on a home standalone player (and should be labeled with that type of thing) I'd have to search to double check myself, but I thought DVD+RW's are best used for computer files storage and DVD(+/-)RW can be used either way - although it really always comes down to the individual DVD/CD Player/Recorder. There are actually quite a few other kinds too, but I rarely see them. I have had trouble with using DVD-RW's in the past and switching to the plus type fixed the problem. So, That kind of leaves me unsure what to say, since - short of buying a Factory Full System Recovery Disc (assuming they produce them) for like $50 and waiting quite a while for it to be delivered - this will be your only lifeline and I don't want to tell you to take a chance, is it possible to exchange it for the +RW's , maybe? or do you have one or two of those aside from what you bought?........

okay, its gotta be either virtual space/page file taking up more room, the hyberfil.sys "returning", system restore points starting to work and take up the newly opened up space or updates. Or possibly just junk that a cleaner could fix..

try running the tiny free program here: WinDirStat

And posting a full screen "Maximized" window of the finished run as a screen capture (it should only take a minute or two to do all that probably)

Mike

ADD: If hyberfil.sys is still there is should be rather obvious, as it's ~4GB!

So while your getting that, I just wanted to check and make sure: you did not download the image file from above (Windows-64bit...blah blah..iso) where I had asked to put it on E : (I'm assuming from what you said that you did not, but just to clarify)?

so you dont need the iso file for RS, we can delete that for tons of space.

Do you have MBAM free version malware scannner?

Okay then - in WinDirStat window, click on that huge ISO image file for Rosetta and in the menu above click: Edit >> Copy Path

THEN JUST D/L THE ONE PART YOU NEED RIGHT THIS MOMENT: fileASSASSIN

That should be a direct link to the download at the MBAM site for fileASSASSIN, which you should download/install and run. Then there will be a box where you can enter the path/name of the file you want to delete, or click the [...] button to browse for it. Since you have it copied in memory, you should be able to simply click in the open space of the box (NOT the button [...] !!) and simply press ctrl + V to paste the entire path as long as it works, then be sure the top radio-button (round shaped check box) is selected for Attempt FileASSASSIN's method for file processing (probably already selected) and then make sure ALL FOUR (4) including the last "delete the file" check-boxes are checked (leaving on the untouched "Radio button's" at the bottom of the window: "Use delete....." & "Use normal......". Now cross your fingers and press [Execute] button. hopefully this will take care of it, otherwise an "offline" uninstall maybe required.
