I am running Win 7 Pro x64 and just upgraded from IE 10 to IE 11. I like the latest version 11, but it has a problem of some kind that frequently causes it to fail to close cleanly when I exit a browser session. When I click on the Close link (the X) or otherwise exit, the browser shuts down but I get an error window that says:

"Internet Explorer has stopped working.
"
"A problem cause the program to stop working correctly.
"Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available"

I then must click on a Cancel button to get the browser closed, otherwise the screen is just frozen. This is not really preventing any further activity, it does close the error window and everything then is normal. But it is annoying. Does anybody know of a cure for this problem **other than revertinbg back to IE10**? (I like IE11 well enough that I can live with it if no fix is available, IE 11 works much faster and easier).

Start IE without any add-ons and see if the problem persists.

Start typing "internet" in the Start menu search field.
One of the search returns should be named
Internet Explorer (No Add-ons)

I have already tried that. It is really not much help because the problem is sporadic. It does not seem to occur in any pattern, so doing as you suggest does not show anything other than normal operation. I will try that the next time the problem appears, but by the time I try it the browser has closed and been reopened, so it may not repeat the problem.

What I need is some clue as to what causes it in the first plsce, some fix I can try.

It could be an add-on - but the add-on might not load unless you visit a certain web page... so pay attention to where you surf. There is probably some info in the Windows Event logs about what part of IE crashed.

It happened again on a certain web page. I then closed the error window, and again opened IE 11 repeating exactly the same steps I had done to bring the error (it was just go to a certain web page). This time when I closed it did not give me an arror. Go figure :=).

OK, thanks. I ran the first fix (except the resetting security, don't want to mess with that), we'll see how it goes.

BTW, I first opened IE to see this message before installing the fix, and when I closed it the error occurred. Then I saved a restore point, opened the browser again to run the fix, and it found some kind of data storage issue or some such, whiuch it fixed. Then when done, I closed the session and no error occurred. I will let you know if the problem reappears. Hopefully that did the trick.

Grasping at straws...
...under the heading of: it won't hurt to try:
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html
If SFC finds/fixes things, then test IE for a while.
If SFC cannot fix what it finds, then we need to deal with that.
If SFC finds nothing, try the next steps:
revert to IE10 - then run this tool
Download System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [November 2013] from Official Microsoft Download Center
The SURT takes a long time, once complete, install IE11 again.

Further: Although I could be wrong about this, the problem seems to occur mostly when I am closing IE after browsing to a financial-related website of some kind, such as banks or investment companies etc.

I have uninstalled IE 11 and reverted back to IE 10. I give up on IE 11 for the near future; maybe try again in a year or so. Thanks for the help.
