Problem with restart during Windows updates

Hi,

For the last couple of Windows updates I've had the problem that it doesn't restart my PC. It reports it's configuring the updates and then that it's shutting down as normal but it no longer reboots the PC. I have had to do it manually either by cycling the power or pressing the reset button. Once I've done that it boots up and completes the update configuration normally.

Has anyone else experienced this or have any thoughts about what might be causing it? It's obviously not a major issue but something's clearly changed.

It's not only on my system either, we have a second almost identical system and that behaves in the same way.

Hi Gwaihir,

Start ORB, type regedit, navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU

Only one entry, Name should say (Default), Type should say REG_SZ

Is that what you have?

If you have a system restore point prior to those updates, you could restore your system to that configuration.

Thanks for responding. The key \WindowsUpdate\ does not exist at that location in either of our systems. Is it possible that a recent update has somehow removed it, and should I try editing it in?

Check for system file corruption
Start Orb, searchbox type cmd
right-click on CMD choose run as administrator
at > type sfc /scannow
2-3 times if it doesn't fix issues

If you still have files that sfc /scannow cannot repair,
Download and Run SURT Tool
Logs located at:
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS
attach CheckSUR.log

Ok. I've run System File Check on both systems and no errors were found. Would it be worth running SURT anyway?

Edit: I've found I already had SURT bookmarked and think I used it sometime last year to resolve the widely encountered problem with Windows spending a long time searching for updates and never finding any.

Interestingly both systems re-started normally after the latest updates. I hadn't changed anything so I can only assume it was a bug in the earlier updates unless SFC repaired something without reporting it.

Yes, for the latest update at least.

I am not marking this thread as Solved because the reasons for the problem have never been identified and it remains to be seen whether it has resolved itself permanently.
